***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Fodder system is going great, I have pics and will post them soon, This a run down on how I do it, I went to atwoods and got two small green house at 20.00 each.
Went to Walmart and bought roasting pans at .97 each, bought 10, got my seeds from my local feed store,it was pretty cheap, 50lb barley 12.00 and 50lb wheat about
12.00 also. I soak about 3 cups for each tray anywhere from 12 to 24 hrs,I put a cap and a half of bleach in the water, after the soak period I rinse. I take all of the pans
and a small tip screw driver, and poke drain holes all over the bottoms for drainage, I can fit 8 trays on each green house, I also bought a tote to sit under the green
house to catch the water run off. It is good to stagger your soak days so you always have fodder growing, mine first few trays will be ready to go out in a day or so,
water twice a day so they dont dry all the way out and make sure the water drains out so it doesnt mold, at the end of the growth pull out, cut up and let the animals
enjoy, this stuff grows so fast you can almost see it...lol.

FYI......you want the seeds to be about 1/2 to 1 inch deep in the pans
and the bleach is to kill any bacteria and mold.

How old is it?  I am not familiar with "paint" but my splash birds start out all or mostly all creamy yellowish-white as chicks and as they start to feather in they start to get blue and black  feathers here and there.

The white/silver chick you hatched for me...is a splash olive egger...it got its splash marking in a couple of weeks ago.

Well, we just had that. It quickly went down to 85 then after I threw on a blanket for added insulation it gradually went down to 80. The last half hour it was above 76. I wonder if they still have a chance of making it now

. I was really starting to fReAk out

because not only my eggs but my chicks in the brooder were getting into a tight ball. I think one bantam got a little smooshed and it looks like it may be starting to become lethargic.

We'll see how they do in the next few days. I'm sure they stayed warm but I know it wasn't good for them. I don't think I have ever freaked out about the power being out before like I did today!

I've had eggs get a lot colder than that for a longer period of time (like all night)

and it didn't seem to effect the hatch rate.

Although they did take an extra day to hatch.

Now being to cold isn't good for chicks.

They can pile up and smother each other trying to keep warm.

Did you ever find you a Jubie roo?

yes I ordered a very nice one from a lady on the Orpington group on Facebook. He's fantastic! I should post a picture soon. The pullets have both started laying and he's finally figuring out his job. I have 3 little eggs that have made it to lockdown they hatch Monday!

Awesome! How are the Russian Orloffs doing?

Maybe Big Mama and the Roo are in hiding??? Hugs Hun!
X2, I hope so. I hate losing any but some I really miss.
We lost Moonpie, our bantam Buff Cochin roo, this week. He was such a good roo - would take care of the babies that hatched first while his hens were still sitting on the nest. He showed the chicks where the food and water were and called them up into the coop at dusk. We got him at an auction for $1.25. The other bidder was buying them for bait in bobcat traps. We had Moonpie for nearly 5 years so I guess that is not bad, longer than bait and he had a 5'x8' pen, and nice coop and 3 pretty girls all to himself.

@Poco Pollo , for a spraddle legged chick - how long did you leave it in the cup- and how often a day? My chick gets itself out pretty quickly, but I could make it stay if that is what is needed. I am wondering if I want to go this way or try bandaids first.

I'd make sure the little guy has access to food and water, and leave him in the cup for a day. That evening, see if his muscles are working better, and let him sleep with his buddies. If he's not walking in the morning, put him back in the cup.

I have a pecker in my bunch of chicks! Grr... found a bantam (which isn't mine) with half it's face bloody. I cleaned the little thing up and a large portion under it's eye then another above it's ear had been pecked until it was down to the flesh. I have it separate from the rest of them right now. Guess I get to wait awhile until it heals to put it with them all but would that blue stuff work or is it better I wait? Also it's so close to the eye I didn't know if anything besides Neosporin would be ok. Darn peckers...

It's okay to spray Vetericin in or near the eyes.
