***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Does anybody know if Atwoods sells single chicks? I tried to pick one up as a companion for a hatchling last night at TSC and they refused. grumblemumblegrump I don't NEED six more production reds inside the house!

Or does anybody in the Tulsa area have any new babies? Rinda? Have a spare girl Legbar or Isbar floating around that just hatched? I'm looking for a new hatch and another around two weeks old.

Girls, if it's possible at all, dear Lord let them be girls.
Over by the Cherokee Hard Rock casino is a little mom and pop feed store that will let you buy single chicks. It's called Lee's Feed. It's on the same main st. as the casino and 11th. So when you get off instead of turning to go to the casino go the opposite direction until you get to 11th. You will turn right and it is down just a little ways on the right hand side.

so sorry for your loss! Youll get them! Our neighbor kid has been the one that gets the predators really bad. Hes kind of brutal on how he gets rid of them though. He let his dog attack to kill a couple raccoons last time but normally he takes them by the tail and hits their head on a tree really hard. Im more shoot and kill quickly kind of person... so his methods are a little rough to me.

I have a pecker in my bunch of chicks! Grr... found a bantam (which isn't mine) with half it's face bloody. I cleaned the little thing up and a large portion under it's eye then another above it's ear had been pecked until it was down to the flesh. I have it separate from the rest of them right now. Guess I get to wait awhile until it heals to put it with them all but would that blue stuff work or is it better I wait? Also it's so close to the eye I didn't know if anything besides Neosporin would be ok. Darn peckers...

Morning everyone. I was greeted with a slaughter this morning, my first big loss. Three hens outside the coop without heads. I am certain it was skunks, there was a hole dug under the fence in a gap where the rocks lined it. I realized imediately that my roo Jack was missing, and after a head count realized that my favorite hen BigMama was gone too. Those B*#@%^ killed five of my flock. My Husband assured me that was their last meal, we will set traps tonight, and we know where they live.

RIP Big Mama

Jack

I guess I am in the market for a new roo, once we get the skunks are taken care of. I would like another Brahma or a Jersey Giant.

So sorry. I have a gold-laced Brahma cockerel for sale, he's about 4 months old. Let me know if you are interested and I can post pics. I don't want much for him, maybe $12?

Lee's Feed is fabulous, I miss living so close to it. I'm sure they will let you get just one or two, especially if you explain you have a singleton at home.

Neosporin is a great option. Keep treating it and keep it separate for at least 3-5 days. Might pick out a smaller chick to put with it for company after a day or two if it seems lonely.

Keep any eye out for the ones you didn't find the bodies of. Last year I had a similar situation and thought I lost 15+ chickens. Only found 5 bodies. After looking around several hours later found three girls hiding in my hay bails. One in the innards of my horse trailer and two more showed up 2 days later. Good luck and sorry for your loss.

Oh Tara :hit I'm so sorry-I remember you talking about Big Mama, I just loved her name. I had the exact same thing happen a few months back (twice). It turned out t be a possum both times. It still literally gives me chills when I think of finding 5 of my babies spread out with their heads gone :-( I can't tell you how sorry I am. I've got roosters coming out my ears (as we all know). If you have any interest in a Gold Laced Cochin (10 months) , Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (5-6 months) you or anyone else is more than welcome to them. RIP to all.

Funny story... I grew up on 193rd between Admiral and 11th. Lee's was a regular trip for us and my whole family knew them personally. After my grandparents died and their house still had stuff in it, some people broke in and stole some cherished items. When they tried to pawn one of the antique saddles off at Lee's, the owner knew whose it was and got the jerks arrested. If I lived anywhere near that area, I would definitely still do business there.

Small world!! My husband's grandparents lived on 11th near 177th for almost their whole married life. They ran a garage and gas station, everything is stonework on the exterior you probably know where I'm talking about. His grandfather passed away before we met and his grandmother passed away about 6 years ago, both from cancer. It's all still there, the station and everything, but there was a fire in the house last summer caused by the fridge's ice maker so the house has basically no value anymore. :( So sad. We still have bonfires and cookouts out back occasionally even though the property is on the market.

I promise I will post a picture...but this chick is all pale yellow with a tiny black dot on its head, a tiny black dot on its back near a shoulder and a large black spot (like dime sized) under a wing. Is this how splash birds start out or is this a paint somehow?

Just had to rub nasty cheesy stuff out of a cockerel's eye. He was an auction purchase- remember the batch of "rare orpington" boys my hubby bought by accident??- and thank goodness I quarantined because 2 weeks later they are all sick. I've lost 4 of them already, they were malnourished and had obviously been overcrowded because several had pecking injuries and bare backs from pecking. The worst boy left is in the house and his eye was all swollen up, between last night and this morning I squeezed out about a marble's worth of cheesy infection. YUCK! Got him on vitamin water and Tylan shots, considering doing penicillian shots too but I don't want to overwhelm his system being SO thin. There isn't really any muscle for the injections, I'm having to do subcutaneous basically.

They are all eating like champs finally so hopefully I won't lose any more. Hate to lose any since we paid for them when we didn't even want them!
