I lost two hens to the heat today and Jack lost 7! His worst day for heat losses ever. Hope everyone else isn't having such a bad day as us here in South Choctaw. ( Monty, everything o.k. over there? Your bad week was last week.)

So far, I have been lucky/blessed etc. I am unable to turn my birds out into the yard just yet, but the temp inside the coop was only about 92° this evening. That was when it as about 100° outside, with a heat index of 108°. They are panting, but that is to be expected, I think. I gave them a bunch of baby carrots and fresh water and my wife gave them a bundle of fresh cut grass from the yard. I'm not sure if they liked it more for sitting in or for eating. They seem to be handling this weather fairly well and are very active.

Hopefully our City Council will grab hold of their senses and realize that chickens are acceptable as pets and fresh egg resources, not to mention fertilizer producers and insect eaters. Neither the article nor the video mentioned when the issue will be brought before the Council though. It's been a topic for them before but was voted down citing it would cost the City too much to enforce the ordinance. That's baloney. Anyway, I'm glad the idea is getting exposure. I'll get off my soap box now.
