***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi all,
Just got 15 chicks delivered from MyPetChicken, 5 EE, 5 Buff Orps, and 5 Golden Buff pullets. Got em in the brooder, they got here fast! Shipped yesterday, and picked up from the OKC Mail distribution center about 2 hours ago. They are all eating, drinking and cheeping, so far so good. I"ve been lurking since I ordered my chicks about 3 weeks ago, and will go pick up my tractor and run in a couple of weeks. Will update as more happens. Happy chickening!

With all these adorable pics of NN's I have to add a pic of the showgirl I hatched a few days ago. Out of 3 or 4 batches of eggs this is the only one I've ever got, I have a feeling it's a roo. What's not to love??

Hi All,
I've got a small backyard flock of mixed breeds, but just recently purchased hatching eggs from lonnyandrinda. I can't wait to get them in the incubator! Five Jubilee Orpington (from another breeder) are still on their way via USPS, so I have to wait another day. AARGH. I've also got WAY too many chicks in the brooder right now. I apparently can't say no.
I just wanted to say hello and see how they BYC posting thing works!

Welcome! Which breed did you get of Lonny and Rinda

We are wanting to start raising chickens for eggs and possibly meat later on. We are very new to this. I have been looking at different hen houses on line. Since we live in S.W. Oklahoma I was wanting to know what type of chickens do well with our weather and where would be the best place to buy the chickens? What is a good number to start out with? I was thinking maybe 4 but would that be two many for a starter coop? I have tons of questions but I guess this is enough for now. Thanks!
Welcome! Oyyy...This sounds familiar, hubby wanted 6 chickens, I wanted 0. See list above for where I am 3 years later. So starting at ground zero....here are my thoughts.
Do you want to start with chicks or full size chickens?
Ideally you would love to get your chickens from people on here, it's pretty broad to say we are all trust worthy chicken owners, but I would take my chances here a lot more than craigslist. Although some good finds come from Craigslist. Getting full size hens from us could be difficult though, speaking for myself inparticular, we are kind of horders of adult birds, but most of us could get you chicks, and we have a VARIETY of breeds between us all.
As far as the coop. I would build or buy a small portable tractor as this will come in handy later for quaranteen of new flock members, then research and take a look at different chicken coops. 3 years later I would totally build my coops different, but they are here now. (Husband just grunted at me, so I will rephrase, Hubby would build those coops differently)

Welcome and congratulations! To you and all the other newbies, continue to lurk and participate, while I don't always contribute there is a wealth of information from most everyone on this thread! The enabler in me must point out that you covered the buff chickens and blue egg layers, but have you been introduced to splash? or partridge? or laced? or blues.......??? or oh my mille fluer? lol

I wonder why the quote didn't show up. Was this the one where u put a quotation under each chick picture. If it was it's great. How do u do that?
When you quote, go into the quote box and type. I change the color to make it stand out. On my computer I can only change the color from firefox though.

I need to figure out this quote and reply thing! Anyway...
I got (eggs)--6 Cream Legbars, 3 Isbars, and 3 Barnevelders. I called her on a whim since we were traveling east that day anyway and took pretty much what she had available!

I've learned so much in the last year. We raised 42 chicks to 13-15 weeks of age. Then, a weasel (yes, a weasel) found the ONE weak spot in our coop (my pic on here) right by the door. I can't even describe what it left behind. Needless to say, we are MORE predator proof now. And I look for ways to get them even MORE safe every day. So, we're almost starting over.

We have several breeds of Marans brooding, Ameraucanas, Welsummers, EEs, Buff Brahmas, and some mixed...all chicks. My son is raising ducks, and now so am I, as I hatched out 5 of 8 of his ducks' eggs a few weeks ago! So amazing!

Luckily, we have 11 acres so as long as the hubs can keep building, I can keep collecting!

It takes a little bit to figure out the quote thing, but until you do, we can just follow along. If you are catching up on several pages and want to save a few comments to respond to when you are done, click the multiple button. Then when you get to the last one, click quote. It will pull up all of the multiples you clicked. If using explorer or firefox, the quote you are referencing will be in gray, then white. Click the whit below the gray and you can type your response, use scroll bar to right to move up in down in quote box. You may mess up several times even years later...but it's ok. We will muddle thru. (Also clicking the pencil eraser on your post will open your post back up and you can edit it.)
