***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i have moved mine into the bathroom tub, as long as they see the eggs they settle down, i do turn the light off too

@Kyzmette i have seen that too, it just melts the heart and captain would try to help broody's too....

i also learned a lesson tonite.... don't feed fermented feed to a broody and chicks, especially if they are feather footed!!

Glad Shelbydog was there with the corid info - 4 hours later is a bit late.

I have a young buff orpington that has decided to go broody on her eggs inside a flower pot. I actually have no idea how many she has (or not) in there - we've been collecting them, but sometimes forget and they tend to collect for a bit. Anyway, it is (was) an empty plastic pot that has tipped over in a pile of stuff on the driveway. I don't want to leave her out there vulnerable to all the coyotes/dogs/cats/coons/etc.

Was thinking of just picking it up and putting the whole thing into the coop. Any thoughts on if she might abandon it - and if I can reduce the possibility by maybe putting the thing inside a show pen set up inside the coop (of course, providing food and water). I have no idea what she is eating now - pretty far away from the chicken yard or the cat food on the front porch.

Normally I try NOT to move a broody- BUT in a case like yours where they are at a very high risk from a predator, I would move her at night when it's dark for best results.

It should be in the mid 80s. I remember wearing a hoodie all day at last year's POOPS. The site has lots of shade trees.

I tell ya what I'm ready for some 80s!

Kass, it looks like you're raising ostrich

In all fairness regarding POOPS location-I've only been on the board 3 yrs but it's been located in central Oklahoma each of those years, hasn't it? It's the people in all other locations that end up either having to miss it or travel 3-4 hrs. Maybe we could poll to see locations of the people who actually plan to attend. That said-I wouldn't mind the drive a single bit. Coral is an awesome planner and in all honesty whoever has to do most the planning get a bit of sayso in location (as they've done in all other years). I sure don't want to plan something that elaborate, I'd much rather drive the extra distance.

It seems everyone seems to feel better. That's good. I love all the pictures. Your goose is lovely, Dusti.
I went to the Checotah Auction. Did anyone else go? I think the hens sold high. There were no geese, but they has some speckled sussex hens and some others I wanted. Hubby finally relented and said I could buy something besides a goose at the auction. Anyway, it took forever to sell all the eggs, so Glenn went to get me something to eat and I bought chicks. He didn't seem too happy when he got back. I did dig into my geese money, but at the rate that's going I don't know when I'll find any I can buy. I don't understand when they sell old english how you know if ther're bantam of LF. I also wanted a few more game hens since they are so broody. The speckled sussex hens sold for 37.50 ea. and there were 8 of them in that pen so, I couldn't do that. They had black sex link pullets I wanted, but they went for 22.50. The prices where weird. The ones I thought would go high didn't and vice versa. Anyway, they had two olive eggers for sale but they were toward the end. I knew one of the guys sort of that had them and he was going out to his truck to get me an egg one of them laid, on the way over. Anyway, Glenn came back in and said he had the car warm and we needed to get the chicks home and taken care of. I should of waited because they might have sold cheap since they were almost last. I wanted them for Dusti. At least I should have waited for the egg for her. Anyway, I'll call the guy I know and see if he has any more fror sale. He's just started up and didn't even know what an olive egger was until recently when he showed someone the eggs the pullet was laying. It was just too late for me. I'm just not ready yet for all that. It was after 4a.m. by the time I got the chicks all settled and us to bed. Got home and one of my RIR hens was dead in the front yard. I 'm pretty sure which dog did it. Our great dane. She jumps on them if we aren't watching like to play and has killed one. No blood just crunched. Brody was in the house and Angel is my guard dog and Curly, I don't even want to talk about, but he hasn't bothered the chickens and if he did, he would tear them to shreds. When we left the auction it was getting pretty empty and there were still a lot of nice birds for sale. I wonder if they sold cheaper? If they didn't speed things up, it would have to have been 3 or so before the sale was over.
I did a no no today, because I think it was too hard on the chicks in the totes I had them in. I built a big brooder out of cardboard(lots of designs online) but I just did my own. I banded them by breed and put them all together. Talk about happy. They flew jumped, played and just had a good ole time. So far all has been healthy, but u never know. I realize it was risky, but I needed it easier on me and happier for them.. I put them on sand, w/ hay under the lamps and a piece of cardboard down where the feed and water go. Now it will be easier to keep clean, than changing three times a day. The welsummers I bought, I have to bath or something. They must have been kept pretty dirty because their poor feet had poo all over and their bellys raw from being wet. But perky little kids, that's for sure.. I also bought Plymouth Partridge Rocks and a few RIR chicks. After Glenn got over his pouting, he said I should have bought the other box of the Partridge rocks. Someone mentioned that they can be auto sezxed. I'm going to look it up.. Hope I didn't get all roos.\\

KYZMETTE----Floyd was not in the mood for his picture being taken but a managed to get a few. Everytime he was doing something cute, I'd put the camera up past the wire and he'd move. I still haven't learned how to use it,so her are the pics I took this morning, He got scrambled eggs for breakfast and loved them. I think he liked the mealworms yesterday better, though.

I screwed up and didn't hit multiple. I'll try again

And I did the ame picture again. I wanted the better one, but don't know how to erase this

If u enlarge this one u can see he's crowing. Something he does a lot of.

Should I edit these pictures when I put them on here, like cutting them just to the subject. Everyone has such good pictures on here and I don't know if that's one of the things u do or not.

Hotcurlr I understand why you did the combine- I hope for your sake that it works out. The ones that would concern me are the ones you described as "filthy feet" and "wet bellies." If they've been kept in damp dirty conditions cocci or respiratory illnesses are very likely. Watch them all like a hawk for any behavior out of the ordinary and treat at the first sign.

You don't have to know if an old english is bantam or large fowl- they are all bantam. They are called OEGB which stands for Old English Game Bantam.

Thanks Diana for looking out for olive eggers for me. I've got a couple that hatched from eggs last month and I got the ingredients to make my own now.

On the pics, I do preview so I can double check which pics I uploaded and delete any I selected by accident or change my mind on posting it.

I like this idea. A parish we used to belong to does one every year to help pay for supplies for Sunday School. I have a copy of the silent bid sheets somewhere. I have a couple of tables we can use to put items on. I think I still have some plastic table covers, too.

You know I think I used the wrong words when I said silent auction...Actually it was a raffle. Everyone donated an item and people could buy raffle tickets, like $1 ea or 10 for $5, something like that. Then we drew the tickets from each bag to get the winner. Then we dumped all the tickets in a basket and gave out several golden feather memberships, hence my membership. lol
I just saw the COOLEST THING!!! I was working in the pen and I heard an odd strained burbling noise from the Brahma pen. They were inside their little house so I looked in and she was standing over the nest area making the odd noise. He was standing next to her, looking under her, and cooing. She clucked back, he paced a little and kept cooing, and right in front of me, she dropped the egg! I would swear he puffed right up and trilled. I'm pretty sure that rooster loves that hen.

That's pretty neat. I caught a roo in with a hen today, maybe he was going to do the same thing.

I have to agree here. While I would love for the location to be more central, planning and coordinating is time consuming. Last year there were just a few of us that kind of pulled it together. This year I just don't have the time. (Hence one of the reasons I was hesitant in bringing it up). But most likely I will attend no matter the location and I am willing to help out to some degree as well. For those of you that are newer, POOPS is a great place to meet fellow Okies in the BYC, swap, sell, buy poultry and talk chicken lol.

Thank you for the info and not chewing me out. They were all in different totes. but in the same room. I just didn't feel I had anywhere to put them ouside as little as they are. Do u think I should go ahead and put corid in the water now as a preventative? So far the poop on all of them is normal, athey are eating and drinking good, but just too cramped before. I checked all butts when I banded them and they all looked good. They are so happy playing. I thought maybe they'd fight, but they're all around the same age. so they seem happy jumping all around. 34 of the rascals.. I know I'm crazy. Especioally if there are no pullets. I need to learn more about the different breeds. I hope the person theat sold the rocks didn't know how to tell. I'm going to look it up now, but won't fool w/ them anymore today. They've had enough. I love Welsummers too and they lay the dark eggs like the marans do.
