***OKIES in the BYC III ***

T Feahers - Did you cut the tomatoes into little pieces? They love bite-sized pieces. I put cabbage into the pen by he head so they can pick it apart, but other veggies get cut up in tiny, tiny pieces.

So glad it's cooler today! Lots of thunder and lightning here, but just a few sprinkles not even enough to wet the ground.

Sorry to all of those that have lost chickens to the heat. Hopefully you guys won't lose anymore!

I went out to candle my eggs that my hens are laying on. I had to throw 8 out of 24 away. They all had blood rings in them. Can this horrid heat affect the eggs? I know with incubators you can control temps and humidity, but not quite so with mother nature.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

YES the heat can be bad for your broody hens on eggs... We have only been able to have 5 eggs hatch out from 6 of our broody hens nests... The heat has caused all the others to explode during their growing time in the egg.. its quite sad really to go out and see what could have been a great looking chick be cooked from this heat..

We had one chicks egg explode the outter shell off leaving it to hatch too early.. sadly it died the next day

Sad to hear about the losses.
Mine survived today. Hopefully they can make it through the night.

Sure was hot today i lost four of my delaware hens to heat

Sorry to hear that Don. Delawares are one of my favorite breeds...gentle and good egg layers as well as pretty.

Of course - no self-respecting genteel country lady would allow her photo to be taken unless she were properly attired with a nice summer hat.

T-Feathers - you got Easter Eggers!! Now you'll have a colorful egg basket too! I cut up the leftover veggies I toss to the clucks, too - they might be a little wary at first, but once they know what's what, they'll love the tomatoes and spaghetti.

Poco - thanks for posting the photo of the gold-black Ameraucana cockeral - he is mighty proud of himself. Is his comb still black? That's why I held on to him so long....I kept thinking "maybe."

Thanks all for sharing pictures!

They were cherry tomatoes and I squeezed them so they busted apart, but they still won't touch them. I thought they would love them. Oh well, I tried to give them a little treat.
