***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So this is going to be a busy weekend. I totally forgot about the chicken show in Norman.. This is also the weekend of the Medieval Faire, which I went to today, so I may skip going tomorrow. The plan is get my stuff to Newcastle early then head back to the faire but I think I will go to the show instead... Sunday is finishing up the platform for the coop and start moving the panels for the chicken yard... It is going to be fabulous!! Also found some seeding trays so I am going to start my veggies for the garden, I know it is late but better then never... Busy, Busy, Busy weekend!!

Spent part of today in the garden and then the rest of the day cleaning cage trays. Cleaned and sanitized the brooder. Then moved two day old chicks from the hatcher out to the brooder in the hot tub room. There is a batch of eggs in lockdown and I set 48 more. No new baby calves today but several cows are close.

We have a soccer tournament for one of the granddaughters Saturday but will make the show in Norman between games. Looking forward to seeing lots of pretty breeds. We won't make the sale in Newcastle. Sounds like there will be a nice selection.

I am coming to like Marans more and more. They are not my cuddily Cochins but they are very friendly and curious. They are really good layers too. I already have 24 hardy chicks from just one roo and pullet. (I have since added another laying hen and have anouther pullet soon near point of lay.) Neighbor Jack has had 6 different colors of Marans and they all lay very well except the Wheatens.
I LOVE my maran girls! They are still young and not even close to laying yet but they are so friendly. I let them out in the yard and our little bantam cochin boy keeps trying to cover them. They don't want any part of it so they quickly run to me and stand under my legs knowing I will shoo him away. One of the girls will come to me and let me rub under her head and breast feathers. Shes a sweet heart but then I hatched them and they have been spoiled and loved on.

Got my FIL wanting chickens. HAHA!!! Its contagious!!!! We will give him some chicks of ours then we bought him a few sex links at Lee's feed. Anyone have any barred rocks?

Haha you've hooked another one! Hey I have some young barred rocks, about 7 weeks old, 6 female 2 male I have them listed on Craigslist for $10 each female $2 each male or $55 for all. Shoot me a PM or a text (I assume you still have my number) if he wants them.

Got it, thanks!!

What causes a chick to reach pipping stage and die? Had 2 do that tonite, am trying to figure it out

Sometimes it's defects in the beak and/or legs that prevents a chick from hatching. Causes include vitamin/mineral deficiency in the parents and low incubation temperatures or temperature swings during incubation. Sometimes if they didn't have enough air cell/too much moisture in the egg still they will pip and drown- the egg will look watery when you look in the pip hole and have a small air cell. Caused by too high humidity during incubation. If you open the incubator during the hatch and it messes up the humidity they can pip and get stuck in their shells and die if you don't assist. Sometimes it is just a weak chick or again vitamin deficiencies in the parents. Not to say you aren't feeding them right, just that they may not be absorbing what they need from their feed.
