***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kyzmette, Sounds like you got some cuties! I've read that calcium makes harder shells...so for hatching eggs, I don't provide extra calcium. The layer hens get oyster shell in addition to their regular feed. By the way, I'm taking your package to the post office in the morning...tried to get as many colors as I could. Each variety is either tied with twine or is in a plastic bag by itself.

So far we have two Buckeyes with another zipped, a tiny Delaware Bantam, four Wyandotte project babies and an F2 CW over Cochin/CW. Will pull them to the brooder when the one that is zipped is out and fluffy. Then will check the last 4 eggs for activity.
Then clean the hatcher for the next group due on the 13th.

It was a beautiful day today. We had a first timer calve after we moved steers to Choctaw. She popped that baby out in less than 10 minutes after her balloon burst. Frisky little bugger was up nursing and bucking within 5 minutes! She is going to make a great momma cow too.
I'm leaving the bedding plants outside tonight...tomatoes and peppers, squash and cucumbers. Should be good the next several days, but next Tuesday morning is forecast for the low 30s so all plants will go back inside.

I know this is not a chicken post, sorry! So my cat Flora is in labor!!! She just had a little orange tabby which appears to have 24 toes.. Flora scared me to death because she screamed when she delivered the first kitten. I have helped hundreds of cats in labor and never had one scream... Well I am a due back in the delivery room, aka the bathroom... I will post a pic of the furry kittlets after they are born...

Kittens are always welcome :)

and kittlets too!

So if you have a juvenile, and you find out that it is possibly a color that is sought after (not even sure of how rare but I am getting PM's asking to sell him), what do you do with it? I possibly have ALL boys in my SFH group from the breeder in Arkansas.

Four crested so if I were to breed I don't want to keep them. One non crested. The only non crested is what they are calling a Snowleopard. I honestly don't want to keep him only because if I were to breed him I wouldn't know WHAT I am doing to get his color in his offspring. On another hand I do want to keep him because he is so pretty. Also I would rather not keep him because I would want this color more available to others so they can enjoy it as well. I'm just not sure what I should do... Here is a photo of his color. I just put it on the SFH thread and waiting for them to respond that it is 100% what they are claiming it to be (I posted an other photo a day or two ago of him and it really is a bad pic of his detail so I had to give more of a description and that is what they are going by).

What would you all do? Maybe I can "rent" him out. HA!
Here he is standing.

Hes about 8 weeks old, hatched around mid Feb. I'm too lazy to get up and get the calendar I have it written down on or I could tell you exactly. He has a little comb but has waddles coming in. One of the crested is already trying to crow. Cracks me up!

Good advice, and....

SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!:weee

@true5 you might sell him to a wonderful friendly woman in your own community who is very committed to the breed... Cathie Sue.

I understand the conflict. I think, in the end, that if this is a serious color treasure - that you should put it out there for someone who will able to give it the attention that it deserves. In other words, someone that has a serious breeding plan for it. UNLESS you might want to give the breeding thing a go. I was interested in some rare breed chicks for the interest factor - but then realized that these birds have a heritage and there are folks trying very very hard to prevent them from going away. To take one away from a potential breeding program just to get nice eggs to eat would be an injustice. So I did not get any, hopefully that will make them available to those that will promote the breed.

Just my opinion.

In the end, he is yours. Listen to everyones opinion, then listen - and pay attention - to what YOUR heart says.

Cheryl, your bird is unique enough for now that you are getting offers. More birds like these will probably pop up. That said, I'd love a chance to breed him to see what hatches.
A SFH rooster without ANY red is pretty rare. It looks like his color is more golden. Leigh's bird is a pullet and the rooster was black based but no confirmation on hen. I have a little pullet who is close but still has some red in her. Genetics is a perfect mystery to me.
PM me if you'd like to talk about a swap or perhaps I could give you my car. I have two un-crested roos about the same age. j/k about the car.
