Thanks Greenbeetle :)

Hello fellow Okies!

New to chickens, but not to this state - born and raised - and now live in a small town in the NE section of the state!

Just stopped by to introduce myself :)

Welcome to Chickens Anonymous!

I live in Skiatook; glad to have you here!

This hatch has not been too easy. The not a twin has a really big butt that must be egg yolk (which I guess is normalish) but he also has a small herniated area - like half the size of a pea. He is alone in a hatcher, so no one picking on him.
Also have a chick that is dragging a section of yolk after it - I covered it with a damp towel insid the hatcher so it would stay still and not drag this thing all around. There is one other bird in there but has stayed off the towel area.

For these two, what would y'all do?

Ok, has taken a turn for the worse. This baby's butt is no longer bulging, but has expelled whatever this is. It does not look like just yolk. There is a lot of red in there like organ. Don't know... On the other one - that was dragging a very small section (a 5th or 6th of this - and really just yellow) of yolk - is still under her towel, still cheeping (mostly because the other chick is now standing on her). But I am afraid to look - there is another pip in there and I don't want to cause a shrinkwrap.

I have never had these kinds of problems before. Certainly something going on.

HELP!
I'm not going to be very much help but I googled "chick intestines out" and it gave me another thread on the BYC with somewhat a similar looking situation. Only the mass was still somewhat in the chick. It said in one of the things that she had looked up (not a lot of info though) how this happens and she talks very little but says that it is a disease? That it can be caused by a dirty incubator (even though she cleaned her's with bleach) and I think humidity too high. Who knows. Might read it, hope it helps somehow. Not a good outcome but what concerns me is that thing doesn't look like yolk and the chicks butt doesn't look big and round like it should.

Oh bardies, that is just awful!! This makes me terrified to ever attempt hatching babies

If what the post above states it true neither of them are going to make it and it's probably for the best. Poor babies and poor you for having to watch them go through it. IF you have the stomach for it perhaps putting them down would be the most humane thing, but I haven't a clue on the proper way to go about it.
Not meaning to offend anyone either, it's just watching something suffer, to me, is worse than losing them in the first place. (had several dogs and horses injured that had to be put down so I speak from experience)

Good luck ...

Need chick advice. And no please do not say I need to build another coop! That is not an option lol

I bought a grown trio of mille fleur d'Uccles which started my chicken addiction. Since then I ordered 10 mille fleur d'uccle chicks that are due in the end if this month. Since I am very impatient i bought 13 chicks at the feedstore and I have 6 eggs from my original trio in the incubator. I originally planned to go through the chicks and keep just the d'uccle ones from the feedstore and the best of my 10 chicks I ordered and hatched. Maxed at about 10 chickens tota for the coop

My biggest problem is we are attached to the growing feedstore chicks and the majority are Cochins. Out of the 13 chicks 8 look to be Cochins. White, buff, black, and blue. My son really likes the blue cochin that is obviously a roo. I don't know what to do. Keep just the d'Uccles and sell the rest or keep a mixed flock or just have Cochins. I was hoping to have eating eggs as well as hatching eggs and chicks to sell. The white cochin is a doll and I cuddle her. The blue roo is a cutey too. What to do?? I still have 6 d'uccle eggs incubating and 10 chicks on their way.

I have 3 dark brahma Cockerels hatched in February if anyone is interested.

I think I'll put them in Coweta auction if no takers on here.

400

I'll give you $20 for all 3.
It's not my fault I've wanted A Dark Brahma boy for yrs. Sheesh. I see you all pointing your fingers and laughing at me :p Actually I'll take any or all that no one else speaks up for and I'll caponize them. If 1 is a slip then I've got 5 Dark Brahma girls to take care of him.

thats a hard one- i speak from experience- unless you plan on selling purebreds, a mixed flock is fine. Its easy to get overwhelmed!

Nana, my condolences :-( Such a big loss for them all when he was just going to get to enjoy all he'd worked yr all his life.

Kim, I've never seen that before on a chick, I'm at a loss. Give them time and see how they do. Maybe the lump was the yolk or something. The yolk does have blood vessels on it while they're absorbing it.

Lori? 3 yrs ago I did EXACTLY what you're doing when I got into chickens. It's a dangerous road you're heading down and there's people shoving chickens at you at every turn lol You'll find your way. Forget the rules and just do what your heart tells you. You don't have to have just 1 or 2 specific breeds and your chickens don't have to match. If you or your kids love them, keep them. Chickens don't live very long and you'll end up losing them much sooner than you wanted to. When you look at the big picture having 2 coops, or even 3, is no big deal. There'll always be someone with more chickens than you have (unfortunately it'll probably be me).
(Edited for spelling-I couldn't even spell "coop" right!)
