***OKIES in the BYC III ***

thanks- all i can comfort myself with is they all get spoiled rotten, and dragon and traveler were getting up there in years, came in tonite to find Eliza gone also- she was a showgirl from betsy and had been having neurological issues the last few months... i sure hope thats it for awhile!

I need advice. My chicks are growing and I have picked out several I want to sell (I think lol). I just am not sure if I should wait and take them too POOPS or sell that at an auction. When I mentioned them before no one seemed excited for them. What should I do?

These are the ones I am thinking of selling. All were bought from Atwoods in March and came from Ideal Poultry

White Bantam Cochin pullet
White bantam cochin Roo
Buff bantam cochin pullet
Buff bantam cochin roo

Blue red OEGB pullet
Porcelain OEGB pullet ( not sure about selling her)

can you post pics of them? Cochins are very popular! its always hard to sell, but i feel more comfortable taking birds to poops than to auctions

If youd be willing to sell just the cochin pullets I'd be interested. Not 100% sure I'll make it to P.O.O.P.S. but have been searching like a madman for some!

Robin, I'm sorry about Dragon :-( I know how special she was to you. That girl had a nice long run with you.

True5, 5 months is also the age that roundworms hit them hard. They've usually contacted them a month or 2 earlier but it takes awhile for their bodies to run down to the point we notice they're sick. I'd definitely deworm with something like Safeguard then repeat 10 days later.

Still a little concerned about my crop surgery girl. She pooped a pile 1/2 the size of a golfball this morning so I know food is going all the way. But her crop area still looks a little swollen although there's nothing in there. Might be from being cut into. She acts good so far though.

Grannychick55, a lot of people swear by plain Ivomec but I don't like it for mites or lice. It does work on mange mites on dogs though. "Ivomec Eprinex" *does work on mites and lice. I use the Frontline spray for dogs and cats and that stuff works better than anything I've ever used. You can buy it labeled specifically for poultry but it costs  3 times more than labeled for dogs and cats. You can also buy generic Frontline at Walmart-works just great.

I lost an Araucana hen last night. Something took her and dragged her right out of the building they were sleeping in. I still don't see how it got in unless it squeezed through a 2" crack at the bottom of the door. Probably a possum, we have a lot of them. (Betsy, possums will tear their heads off and leave the rest also). I'd lost another Araucana hen a few months back. I immediately moved the Ara rooster and the remaining hen to a 4x8 wooden roofed coop/run. They won't have much room for a few wks but I'll build them their own covered yard when we get back from NC. I am NOT going to lose my beautiful sweet Ara boy. I got chills when I realized I could've lost him instead of the hen, the hen was a sweetheart but he's one of my favorite roosters of all of them.

Kim, Spook is way cool looking! Thank Heavens I have no desire to get baby cows :-/ Because I'd end up with 10 of them.
Do you mean the spray or liquid put on thier backs I do not see any but would like to know what to use and should you do a preventive treatment ? What about DE that is food grade does help ?

I have a question and it is probably a silly one but I don't know being new to chickens. Can chickens get fleas and ticks like dogs and cats can from being out side. Just curious if they can. I would think they could pick and eat them off themselves but don't know. Like I said sorry if this sounds like a silly question.

Thanks

Yesterday I went out to the silkie pen and my showgirl hen I bought from Betsy was dead. She must have just died because she was still warm. Looked her over and no wounds or anything that looked like an injury so don't know. I know since I bought her she has never laid an egg and she is over a year old, so felt her vent area to see if by chance she was egg bound, felt nothing. It is always bad when you loose a bird, but when you have no idea as to why that makes it even harder. She has always been active and was even active that morning so don't know what happened.

Have just read up on at least half dozen predator identification sites, and the only thing that fits the damage is an owl. However, since I am VERY sure an owl couldn't have gotten in and dragged her across the floor and up and out of that opening, this sort of bolsters my suspicion that a four-legged animal caught, killed and dragged her out and was then chased off by an owl. From what I read, there are others that will take the head, but they appear to first eat other parts, specifically the crop and entrails. All the sites state an owl will take only the head and neck.

Am still only able to post through received emails, but BYC is now trying to help me. It is sounding like it is a problem with my browser, but not yet sure.

Sounds like a coon took the hen, they seem to work harder for a meal then any other critter out there. The predator had to have really looked for any weakness in your pens.

No stupid questions- i have seen a flea issue, and did find a tick on a pullet a few years ago between her wings, i don't think she could reach it. I routinely powder them and check them over-

I am so sorry!! Sometimes we just never know, a defect unknown, a spider bite, no way to know unless you have a necropsy done.

I want to open art commissions, but I have to get my parents' permission, first. Do you guys think this is a level that is good enough someone would take a commission? I am not sure of myself, so I wouldn't be a good judge. Criticism?
My first question would be to ask if you have any of your real art imaged and posted online. This piece is cute, but it's impossible to tell what your true artistic talent is. If this piece is 100% original then it's well done, but it's a line drawing with some color and no depth. It also has some technical flaws, like the shoulder line that makes it look more like this is a dog giving itself a tourniquet before shooting up, than a dog chewing through a rope, which I assume it's supposed to be. If you're going to take commissions, it's going to mean giving people what THEY want. It'll require the rendering of physical traits, expressions, textures and backgrounds based on what somebody else has requested, so you would need to translate their wants into artistic form. If they're making a request limited to the styles you're familiar with, then you're golden, but the more styles you're familiar with will help you. This one piece is really cute, and as I said, it's better than what most people will ever be able to do, but it's no indication of what you're really capable of. I can tell you're talented, but I'd love to see your other stuff.

Oh no! I'm so sorry for .your loss. And yes, you have tons of questions and tons of doubts when you have no idea why.

Some of my shaded drawings. I don't do backgrounds nearly as often as I should. And, yep, this drawing is original, an idea of my own for the character's backstory. And, as for the rope, it doesn't look like a rope as much as a ribbon, but I drew this late at night and I was on my pain medication so I was tired.

And, I work on various expressions, I tend to sketch a good few of them per page of sketchbook to keep myself familiar with them. I mainly do felines and canines, occasionally other animals. And people have never been my strong point, so I don't do them. I know another artist who is strictly canine/feline artist and she makes quite a bit so I figure as long as I can draw fairly well, I can probably do about the same in the commission business.

I don't plan on making commissions my sole income, but since art is what I love, it would be nice if there was a tangible benefit from it. I cant do backgrounds, and expressions, and poses/character features, to answer your question.

This is older but an example of a background of mine
