M. caninus to be more specific.... Otherwise known as the dog penis mushroom... here is a more specific page on it: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/mutinus_elegans.htmlOkay mushroom lovers, foragers, Nanakat, here is one for you guys to identify??????
Found these in the yard this morning. I didn't have time to take a pic then. This morning the were not dried at all, the stems were thick and plump, the cap was that black, but it was gooey, liquid, black. By the time I got home around noon thirty, the stems had dried to what you see, they black goo firmed up and solidified, the flies were very attracted to it, and it has a mildly unpleasant smell. (keep in mind what I do for a living, the smell may not have been mild to most, but didn't seem horrible to me) Any ideas?
see...I would perish in the bush.M. caninus to be more specific.... Otherwise known as the dog penis mushroom... here is a more specific page on it: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/mutinus_elegans.html
The stinky goo at the top attracts flies for spore proliferation. Just before the mushroom 'fruits', there is an egg shaped body. These are edible. My father (an advance amateur mycologist) tells me that they are delicious, but I've never managed to find them before the stinkhorn form erupts. When fresh - they are beautiful!!
