***OKIES in the BYC III ***

didn't know frontllilne made a spray or that i would kill lice.

I don't know about lice, but yes they make a spray.  Last time I got a bottle the small one was about 40 and 80 for the big one, the small one lasts forever though.

We got ours on ebay for like $20/can. Course I have to buy 3 cans at a time so it still gets expensive. Generic Frontline can be bought super cheap on Ebay and even at Walmart. I can't remember the dose but it's like 6 drops for a Cochin sized bird. Lice and mites give me the eeby jeebies, and you can't avoid them with wild birds and mice. But you can prevent them. Frontline keep them clear of bugs for at least 3-4 months, that's when i get around to re-dosing so I'm not sure how long it'd last otherwise.
Miohippus, I used to bathe and dip them all also the 1st year I had birds. It got old fast :)

I should've been more clear. It's not an injection. You put the Frontline drops under their feathers on the back of their necks. With the spray you spray under each wing, their stomach and a spot on their neck, it's not exact. I haven't been happy with Ivomec but i know lots of people here use it. There's something you can get at feed stores called Ivomec Eprinex that works awesome, it's a pour-on wormer for cattle. It's different than Ivomec though. I gave away more than I used and even with all my birds that stuff lasted like 18 months.
I think I'll get that next as a matter of fact.

no, i knew frontline was a drops, but i thought you had to inject the ivomec and that it was the alternative.

When you say frontline drops are you talking about the stuff you use on cats and dogs? If so I think the spray sounds way more economical!

Does anyone have any luck with DE? If I see mites or lice on a chicken (always the new ones) I put sevindust on them-then and only then. After that I just try to DE all my birds every 2 weeks. It seems to work for me but maybe it's my imagination.

While we're on the subject of pests I'm wondering what people do about flies? We have fly strips hanging up and so far I've caught pecan flowers, a sparrow (we used sand to free the poor guy) and some fruit flies. Fail. Id love other ideas!

Flies, you can mix up blue dawn in a spray bottle with water, add a touch of vanilla and spray around, do the same with pinesol. I also buy fly predators, they go after th larvae- its a never ending battle, i hate flies. Also, sprinkle the run and coops with gardening lime- that helps alot. I hang flystrips where i hope birds won't get caught in them, if you catch a bird or chicken, wash in dawn, it will cut the glue- i have a chick named sticky feathers- what a mess!

I have no local chicken buddies...so I figured I would share on here. I looked outside and saw my two Roos duking it out...blood everywhere :( these two were raised together, are 2-3 years old and have been great for the past year I have had them. ( I lost 3/4 of my hens and I'm sure that's causing an issue) I have 20 pullets I'm growing but they are still inside. These are my first Roos. Is this going to be the standard now? Will I have to re-home one or will adding in the new hens when they are grown help? Grrrr I was so proud of my boys. On a lighter note....they both got a trip to the bathtub and a good blow dry. It always makes me laugh how much they enjoy the dryer.
400

There is my ragged SLW. He looked kinda pitiful now :/. My BR is in a dog crate for the night on the dining room table. And as I'm sitting here in my couch after bathing two bloody Roos....I feel like the crazy bird lady. 25 birds in the brooder to my left. 5 ducks in their brooder to my right. And a roo on the table...that I'm hoping doesn't crow in the morning. Lol
