***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a weird question. When posting a rooster/roosters on Craigslist for free is there a concern they might be used for fighting? I'm just wondering. I'd rather just raise them and eat them than risk that. Which was our original plan anyway, just thought Id give them a chance to be roosters somewhere else. Does that stuff even happen anymore? And what would a bantam be useful for anyway? I'm feeling like an overly paranoid person now.

I feel your pain, for sure. I won't post any free roosters on Craigslist anymore. I post them with a picture for $20 (for purebreds) and then won't take the money when I give them to them, it weeds out the undesireables. I figure no one's going to be willing to pay $20 for a rooster if they're going to use them for bait or live food for their dogs. You may not get them placed but that's ok. Better a humane death at your place than other things that could happen to them.

Quote: that would be a real concern for me, which is why extras are caponized and join the free range bug eater gang- i can always use them that way- why not learn to caponize from coral at her clinic?

If the man is a varmint hunter, those guys use live chickens for luring coyotes and bobcats.

It is definitely on my list of to do things, but the distance is too far for me to travel right now. Im hoping to go in the future tho.

Thats a great idea. Ive culled a few chickens and while its not my favorite thing to do I rest easy knowing they had a good life and went as peacefully as possible. Anyway, I feel rotten about the little guy, and of course he was the 8 years olds chicken and he asks about him all the time. I always felt confident saying he's a ladies man.

that's something your children should keep for their children's children's children to have...kwim Vern?

Oh definitely!

@Yardbirdmom

I'm finally getting better at telling gender in mine, and the one thing I've noticed that helps time and time again is leg thickness. If you could look at a bunch of the same breed together, the legs will almost always give them away. One of mine recently has had me going back and forth, girl, boy, girl, boy, but I kept thinking that if I went by leg thickness alone, it was a boy. Sure enough... sigh.

I have my eye on another juvenile right now that was doing a lot of male posturing as a chick, chest bumping and puffing up, but the legs say girl, and I think girl will be the final answer.

There's a couple of people here who can sex an EE chick by the comb Every. Single. Time.

I cannot wait to get better at it - how many years does that take??? lol

Thanks for the information. I will attempt to do some comparisons between the one I KNOW is a roo and some of the females. I did notice yesterday that the Buff roo and the Marans had a 'show down' chest bumping moment. I'm SO disappointed that one is a roo.

@YardBirdMom I agree Cuckoo Marans is a roo, Nip Nip is a hen- you can distinctly see the white ROUNDED tips to the feathers in the saddle area and also on the neck.

On the Brahmas in the pic with 4 birds the one against the wall is definitely a roo looking at the height and color of the comb. The one close up and to the right I'm not sure on. Can we get a side view? I'm looking for saddle feathers and leg size.

Oh I'm so glad you say Nip is a hen! She's wild and crazy but I love that bird! I will try to get some better pictures, which means catching them. I might can do it tomorrow.
Hey guys all your good thoughts a few weeks ago worked for me! I got the job. I am the new 6th and 7th grade Science Teacher in Dibble

If anyone has Science stuff they want to get rid of I am a new teacher and looking for things for my classroom

Congratulations!!! I wish you the best!

That is awesome!!!

well, after a rough week, poor mama guinea only has the one chick- but better than none i suppose

and a few cute pics for ya-

spit grew up- too darn cute

and this was supposed to be an ee.....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I am really developing a like for the frizzles! :D Adorable! So is this little EE baby! Love the nose bump!

the thing that has me guessing on the black and white one is, could it be a hen feathered mix? Like a serama?

I honestly do not now what she is! All I was told was "Black Sex Link", but I do think someone got her mixed up from somewhere else. Either the place she came from or after she arrived at Atwoods, because she is built different, smaller, the tail sticks straight up, and her color are all different from the other BSL girls!

PS: Where is coral located? What does it cost to go to the clinic? When is the next one?

PSS: Had to say thanks to miohippus for transporting my latest chicken member! I am the proud owner of a new Light Brahma roo that is simply gorgeous!
He is settling in nicely in my brooder pen and is actively crowing (well trying to and kind of accomplishing some noise lol) and letting all know he is LARGE and IN charge! Adorable!

I'll post pics tomorrow :)

I won't argue with anybody (there's a d***head on another thread who supports cockfighting who tries to convince people this doesn't happen, but is happy to take everybody's free roos), but I will tell you what I know from experience. I don't want you to feel bad, but you asked a question, and I'd rather people know than support cockfighting unknowingly.

I grew up in a very country family (the indoor plumbing wasn't that old, and we hauled our own drinking water). My uncle was good friends with a guy who raised gamecocks. Back then there wasn't any such thing as chicken hobbyists, so spare roosters always ended up in the stewpot, and people weren't giving them away by the bundle, so they were a commodity. My uncle's friend would buy my grandparents' roos for a decent price, because he could use them to show off one of his birds without fear of hurting it, and he would make a lot more off the sale of his gamecock than what he spent on the baiter. Bantams would be no threat to a gamecock, but could still work to display the viciousness of the bird for sale.

That's what dogfighters do with non-fighting dogs. They use a kill and reward system, and work them up to arena-ready dogs.

And I despise anybody who takes pleasure out of another creature's pain.

@YardBirdMom The sides of everything is 1" chicken wire. The add on cover is an old EasyUp with wire to the top of it. Designed to keep them in and others out during the day until they're old enough to free range. Love that they put them selves to bed at night and I only have to close the coop now. The guineas were evicted today as they killed my little blue marans last night.
