***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hey guys all your good thoughts a few weeks ago worked for me! I got the job. I am the new 6th and 7th grade Science Teacher in Dibble :)

If anyone has Science stuff they want to get rid of I am a new teacher and looking for things for my classroom

Congratulations to you!!! Dibble is lucky to have you!

I won't argue with anybody (there's a d***head on another thread who supports cockfighting who tries to convince people this doesn't happen, but is happy to take everybody's free roos), but I will tell you what I know from experience. I don't want you to feel bad, but you asked a question, and I'd rather people know than support cockfighting unknowingly.

I grew up in a very country family (the indoor plumbing wasn't that old, and we hauled our own drinking water). My uncle was good friends with a guy who raised gamecocks. Back then there wasn't any such thing as chicken hobbyists, so spare roosters always ended up in the stewpot, and people weren't giving them away by the bundle, so they were a commodity. My uncle's friend would buy my grandparents' roos for a decent price, because he could use them to show off one of his birds without fear of hurting it, and he would make a lot more off the sale of his gamecock than what he spent on the baiter. Bantams would be no threat to a gamecock, but could still work to display the viciousness of the bird for sale.

That's what dogfighters do with non-fighting dogs. They use a kill and reward system, and work them up to arena-ready dogs.

And I despise anybody who takes pleasure out of another creature's pain.

Thanks for sharing that. This is exactly what I pictured. The guy asking for the roosters said he will send me a picture of the d'uccle cockerel. I'm anxious to know he is indeed ok. I was kind of a wreck about it for a bit.

Tell him you and your son want him back and offer him money. I'm sure he'd understand.

If he has him and he looks good then I will feel comfortable with him keeping the d'uccle. He said he uses them for bug control. Thats a better life than I can offer the cockerel. But, I have yet to see a picture.

Im just waiting.

How are your new girls? I saw someone on CL has light brahma pullets for sale if anyone is interested.

I don't think I've ever had a cuddlehound like this little boy. He followed Evi around until she picked him up and I had to go in the house to get my phone for the pic. When I came back out he was just snuggled up with his eyes closed. Maybe I should name him Cuddles.

@ashtree what is CL? Where are these pullets? I'm not asking because i want them, of course... just curious. :D

@YardBirdMom The sides of everything is 1" chicken wire. The add on cover is an old EasyUp with wire to the top of it. Designed to keep them in and others out during the day until they're old enough to free range. Love that they put them selves to bed at night and I only have to close the coop now. The guineas were evicted today as they killed my little blue marans last night.

Stupid guineas!! Why did they kill it???

This is my new roo --- I am naming him "Crazy Crow" because his crowing sounds so crazy lol And his nickname will be C.C.

He's a bit wild, but he is docile when you get hands on him.

I'm an Okie and new on here...new to chickens too! We got ours on Monday so we are truly newbies. But I have been reading and learning from the posts on here. I expect this is going to be a fun adventure!

Hey KT

!

You are going to have a blast! As your babies grow bigger, you spend more time here, you will get the 'bug'.... You'll know it when it hits you - it's called the 'swapping/trading chickens bug". Or is it a disorder? Perhaps a disease???

Whatever IT is, you will get it I assure you!

I'm Bev and I live in the Tryon/Agra/Perkins area ..... take your pick!

Welcome to BYC! You'll never find a greater bunch of junkies anywhere! Chicken therapy is good for the soul, and this group definitely needs therapy! Just be warned, in a year's time you WILL utter the words "I think I need to downsize." ;)

Yardbirdmom the next clinic is at my house mid july, I'm in coweta. Pm coral (Poco Pollo) if you want to ask if there is still room. She will do another but I don't know when. She lives south of me in Haskell.
