the final duckling hatched, mama duck has a dilemma, this one has a hard time keeping up- how long can i wait to reintroduce them, so she can be part of the flock?

I would separate her from the flock if she's acting off, even if it's not her egg.

You can always put food coloring on the vents of the chickens you suspect of laying (color coded eggs)

Interesting. I have heard that before. Just on the outside or a little in. And do you do it everyday until yoy get that egg. I have some that I'd like to know whose laying them. They are jumbo! Poor thing.

We only intended to get 6 chicks because we are so new at this. But we had to order a minimum of 15. So we have 14 thriving chickens! Yikes! Who know what the future holds, though!

I've lost two of my 6 year old hens this week. Both were resting in the sun on separate days...just peacefully crossed over the Rainbow bridge. Both were very healthy girls, just retired old ladies. They had been yard buddies from the very beginning, so it is fitting they should go together.

The garden is beautiful after our short rain last night. The young chicks who have discovered they can squeeze under the chain link fence were out this morning chasing a few grasshoppers between the beds of veggies. Even discovered a few in the squash plants. So fun to watch them act like adults even when they are only 10 weeks old.

So goes the circle of life on the farm.

I've decided to sell all three roosters to a good home only, if you know of anyone. Micah is a black birchen, Gabriel is a silve(blue)? birchen, and tarzan is black and silver or blue. I'm not sure what you call it. They are very big boys, and have the teenager hormones. Time to be locked up, poor guys. If They were guaranteed a really good home, I'd give them to someone too. I just decide, with the projects I want to do, I don't need umpteen roosters, and the ones I keep have to get along w/ the others. They can have their own girls and coops at night. Someone told me, if I like to free range and want some purebreds to let one rooster out at a time and hatch only the breed eggs I want. I like the roos w. their girls because they seem to tak care of them. I lost my first, well 2nd actually hen since I've had the dog. The first one was injured, and I brought her in the house, it was raining and she was hypothermic. I did get her dried and warmed up. But like a dummy tube fed her and she died. She must of had internal injuries. She looked [pretty rough. I[m really surprised at losing the other hen, no signs, so maybe the hawk is back.

OKIE site. The people on here are very good, but also very tricky at enabling and turning u into a chicken addict.

yeah, little boo boo is a few days behind them, so i am hoping a couple days and he can join them, he is wobbly, doing better- he got stuck in the mud on has back - mamma was standing there stamping her feet, like get up ! so i scooped him up and brought him in

How do u mean it can't keep up?  Just younger than the rest? 

I am not sure how long it stays on. I think you just swab the whole "area" and the "area" of a laying hen is bound to be somewhat "open" to get some of the "wet parts" with the dye.

@artsyrobin here is Priscilla and her brood in the tractor. They free range everyday with the flock but still go to bed in their own coop. The little roo is so pretty. I named him D'artagnan (I was watching the three musketeers)

Anyone have a guess as to what this guy is? He was suppose to be a bantam but is way bigger than all my bantam Cochins ect
