***OKIES in the BYC III ***

How do you know the middle toe is going numb? Is there any presentation to suggest the middle toe is numb?

Are there any other symptoms? Seizures? Loss of feathers? Listlessness? Change in comb color? Change in poop? Does the bird do the splits, one leg up, the other down?
I figured out the at the middle toe was numb because it would kinda flop around as the bird tried to walk and when it would step on the toe like it wasn't even there. And would seem a bit confused when it tried to take another step and had to pull it from underneath it's other foot. There are no other symptoms at all.

There are no wounds, swelling, or fever on them at all. I didn't autopsied any of them because it didn't occur to me and because I lack the intestinal fortitude.

Most states have an agency that will autopsy, some charge a fee some do it for free. Since this is so unusual and is happening to more then one bird, I would contact and send for autopsy the next one that it happens to.

It seems like a long shot, but google "curled toe paralysis" in chickens. I believe it's due to a vitamin deficiency and it can frequently start in the middle toe.

What kind of hawk is stalking my chooks? It has a light colored belly and a triangular tail.
most likely a redtailed halk but a pic would help id better. Here is a pic i took of one.

It is not very good but may give you an idea. They vary in color also so although this one has a redish chest not all of them do some have a cream colored chest.

he meant business, this means I just have to be extra vigilant. They had no idea they were being stalked....no picture, it never got close enough while I had time to take a picture, it was not perched, it was flying around looking for a good way to strike. I was too busy shop's everyone under the bushes.

Is that guy actually perched on your run??? The nerve! Will a red tail or red shouldered hawk go for full size chickens? Or just bantams? Or just chicks? We have a chicken named peregrine because it looks like, well obviously, a peregrine falcon. My husband and I joke that one morning we will go out to the coop and all the chickens but peregrine will be dead and she will swiftly take flight :lau she's a large fowl cochin tho...nothing about her is swift!

Do you think your dogs will be enough of a deterrent? I feel like my Great Pyrenees works hard on keeping EVERY bird out of our yard. Especially the bluejays. He has some serious beef with them.
