***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have one or two 15 week old black cochin pullets if you want one. $15.

400

It is so frustrating to receive a box of crushed eggs in the mail. :(

Oh that is awful. Did any of them arrive uncracked? What kind were they? I've never ordered shipping eggs but I'm planning on it. But I've always wondered how eggs can be packaged in such a way that there's not a giant disaster. I'm curious to see how it is done.

The sale in Checotah went on until the wee hours of the morning. I was able to get my last cage around 1:30 a.m. Dusti - Thanks so much for sitting with me. I appreciate your company and hope you weren't bored.

I sold two Toulouse geese, a trio of Delaware, a pair of Golden Lakenvelders, and a splash Ameraucanas cockerel. It was a good night for both buyers and sellers. I like to see both parties benefit. I'm already missing my geese. They went to a good home, so I'm not worried about their welfare. I miss their greeting, and I know the new owners will soon be smiling and giggling when the gees flap and say "Hello!" in the morning.

They are Black Copper Marans eggs I got to diversify my line. Found the person on a FB chicken swap page. I'm hoping they will refund some of my money but hatching eggs are "Buyer Beware."
10 were CRUSHED, 2 are cracked, 9 are intact but I need to candle to check for hairline cracks. The whole box reeks so I assume they broke soon after she gave them to the post office, it also means BACTERIA. I have wiped the eggs down and drenched the eggs with Oxine, after they dry I will seal cracked ones with beeswax. I don't have much hope for any of them.

And to think I was excited when she told me "I sent lots of extras."

Order was for 12+.

This is how I ship my eggs, and I have NEVER had an egg broken in shipment with this method. This lady just put the eggs in a section of egg carton bottom (not even enclosed with a top) and packed shredded paper around it. Yes it was double boxed but that doesn't keep them from knocking together!!!! I am just beside myself. I have never received such a poorly packaged set of eggs.

Yea I looked at the eggs right after I asked and realized they were probably marans! :) Is the foam taped around them or is that something specially designed for shipping eggs? That looks like a great method. Do you put packing peanuts or anything on the top or bottom?

It is a section of pipe insulation. :) I special order it online, Lowe's doesn't carry that size. I can look it up if you are interested in knowing. I stuff some paper towel or bubble wrap in the bottom, slide the egg in, and stuff some paper towel or bubble wrap in the top. No other packaging required, and it costs me about $5-6 to pack a dozen eggs. I use the flat rate shipping boxes so the tubes are always the exact same size, a medium box holds 14 tubes (for 12+ orders) and a large box holds 26 if I remember right. I can cut a bunch of tubes in early spring and put them in a big sack next to a stack of flat rate boxes which are free from the post office, add a roll of tape to the pile and I can knock out a bunch of egg orders at once that way. Flat rate shipping labels printed from USPS.com, paid through my paypal account, and then drop them at the counter at the post office. It's the easiest way I've found.

ETA: I always write on the invoice that is set on top of the eggs warning the buyer that the eggs are not taped in and to remove each tube SLOWLY.

I'm years away from needing the info but am interested in what to expect from good shipping. And this looks great. Looks like alot of effort goes into making sure your eggs arrive securely.

I would be furious!  Buyer Beware or not.  That woman needs to see your photos and learn how to ship her eggs!

X2 has she had any success shipping like that? I would think not. What a mess.

@Kassaundra, secure through trial and LOSSES. The window covering came after one of dogs found its way in and extra rocks and wire around the bottom after what I refer to as "The Great Weasel Attack of 2014. Weasels suck, by the way.

@lonnyandrinda, I can't believe someone actually sent those thinking they would make it! Your packing job, however, looks top-notch.

@ashtree, every box of eggs I've ordered has arrived in good condition with eggs wrapped in bubble wrap with more bubble wrap, shredded paper or peanuts as stuffing. The box may move, but the eggs do not. The styrofoam is a nice touch, especially in this heat if there was a cold-pack involved.

@Poco Pollo, if I lived in Santa Fe, we might would live in a yurt! We visited there a couple years ago...so pretty. I have joked though, that if I give up on chickens (which I almost did after The Great Weasel Attack of 2014) the coop would make a good man (or woman) cave.

Worked in the barn all day yesterday cleaning and reorganizing....started because I could smell a dead mouse! The smell was driving me bonkers.

Besides mouse carcass, found a set of Delaware Bantam eggs behind the refrigerator....silly girl!

Got three quail eggs yesterday and three this morning...here is a cute comparison. The picture is from my phone...awfully small picture...guess you will have to click on it for a bigger photo.

And my four year old grandson having fun with the chickens back in June. I just found the pictures on my phone.

Poor Baldy looks worse in the picture than she really is. She has grown back a lot of feathers and lays a huge egg 4 times a week.
She was Samson's favorite hen. Sure miss that Cochin rooster.

I wonder if the pipe insulation lets the egg breathe better than bubble wrap? I bet it does.
