***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A friend told me yesterday that Oklahoma City has ruled on backyard chickens, and that they are only allowed on 1/2 acre or larger lots. That's all she knew, and I'm sure there is more to it than that. Does anyone have definitive information?
I'm interested in knowing. Last I heard, backyard chickens were shot down, didn't know anything new was coming through.

The OKC Chickens facebook page posted, "We lost this morning; they voted no to urban chickens in Oklahoma City. Yes to front yard gardens, though"

Oops that was from December. I don't see any word from more recently.

Would like to invite everyone to mark your calendars and plan to attend the 2nd annual Sooner Classic Table Top Serama show to be held in Stillwater, Ok. on Oct. 4, 2014. Guaranteed to be a fun event whether you show serama or not.

I am 1810 posts behind.......

Will be older than this before I get caught up! :)

Quote: Most recent article I could find (which doesn't mean there isn't something newer) is that they inadvertantly lifted the 1 acre restriction, so while backyard chickens were not intended to be legalized, right now it doesn't have a restriction. (originally it was 1 acre minimum with other restrictions on how close coops etc could be)

If anyone sees something about 1/2 acre or new info I'd love to hear it!

I put it on my calendar! I don't know if I'll be able to go, but it'll be a great excuse to go back to Stillwater. :)

Article in last weeks paper stated that the council reinstated the restriction at their monthly meeting.
No one showed up at the council meeting to argue for keeping their birds.
The decision recognized that some people had purchased birds and they were given 6 months to sell them.

I'll see if I can find the article.

I have two you can have...They both have a healthy respect for people because they have not been handled and will move out of the big person's way.  One is Black and the other is Buff.   I posted pictures a few weeks ago.

:welcome   it is good to see you learned that already.  Now tell us about your chicks....or your want list.

I'm still undecided about a rooster in the bantam coop/run. They won't free range and my son does alot of the tending to chickens throughout the day. I guess I'm worried a rooster would be more aggressive if cooped up. So I'm still on the fence about it. But, should I decide I do want a rooster I'll let you know. Are yours bantams? I could not find your post about them from a couple weeks ago.

Sorry to hear about OKC chicken stuff going in the wrong direction. :( I know lots of folks there with chickens and I hope this can be reversed in the next 6 months. It's not just about eggs; I have friends that truly love their chickens.

I have a long list of breeds I want to add to my flock. True amerucanas, Swedish flower hen, jubilee Orpington, speckled Sussex, marans, welsummers, mille fleurs, barnevelder, and brahmas. I plan on ordering from a hatchery in the spring but I want to try to get them locally from backyard chicken owners first. Does anyone have or know anyone who has these chickens? I'm interested in hatching eggs, chicks, or young hens for fair prices. I'm located north of Tulsa. Since I'm almost positive I won't be able to get every breed by spring I was also wondering what hatcheries everyone uses? I'm leaning towards either ideal or cackle. Thanks!
