***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Unhappy results with my last hatch....not a single chick hatched...9 Serama and 9 mixed Bantams. I think the thermometer was the problem. It was reading 99.5 but the real temperature was probably lower. They were alive when I removed the auto turner on day 18. That made the actual temperature a tad lower. Humidity was good. They didn't hatch on Aug 1. Candled tonight and had no movement. Eggtopsy tonight showed different sized yolks that were not completely absorbed and in several there was albumen like about day 19. Guess I'll be working on getting a digital thermometer kit for the Hovabators.
Three hens with eggs due to hatch on Aug 1 had great hatches.

I bet your granddaughter was heartbroken :-( I'm so sorry. I can't ever bear to crack the eggs open and look to see what went wrong.

Yes, she told her mom "I think I'm going to cry" when I told her mom about what happened.
Someone in the Harrah Newalla area listed 5 month old Serama pairs on Craigslist. I don't know that that is the route I want to go. I'd rather have eggs to hatch so Brinklee gets to start with them as younger chicks but I'm willing to explore that .....if it is someone an OKIE thread person knows.

We've used the cookie tin idea but w/ the cement block now for several years it has worked well for us.
i like that idea alot better than cookie tins

Quote: yes, seems safer to me than the cookie tins too,, and the birds can stand near for warmth

i have seramas, and the eggs can be hard to hatch, i know quite a few serama folks, might see if June Suhm has chicks you could buy or eggs? If not i can save some once the girls start laying again, or you could go through Castle Delight Seramas, i've never had a problem hatching her eggs-

we had a showdown with the snake that ate my pet starling 2 years ago, heard a noise on the the porch and the dang thing was in the cage with the blind serama and hannah..hubby totally shocked me he came out grabbed it took it around the corner and did the deed...same one i had it out with under the porch

I've already visited with June. She doesn't have eggs. I'll have to ask about chicks.

Glad you got the snake!

@NanaKat I've got 5 Serama pairs and none of those girls are laying or I'd gladly save you eggs. I feel bad for your granddaugher, I know she was really looking forward to them and they're just precious little birds.

It had its appeals. Truthfully I didn't want to go, but my plane ticket was already paid for months previously so I had no choice. But there were redeeming elements such as riding on a jet there and back for the first time in my life. And there were other worth times like the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld.

Holy serpentine serama snacker Robin, I thought you already took care of that slithering menace! You tell your hubby he's my hero. I came home and found a black snake in my tub, so I finagled it into a trashcan and set it free in the back pasture, because I hate killing them... but I'd make an exception for your return guest. I would actually make an exception for anything that tries to eat my chickens. I'm so glad to hear your babies are okay!

About to go look at some two week old Rhode island reds. Anyone know how to tell if they're production reds or bred to standard at that age? I won't be able to see the parents they were hatched out of bator.

My son was sold some (supposedly Rhode Island Reds) chicks . They are huge compared to standard RIR's. The adults are lighter in color than RI's, and their eggs are humongous. I believe his are Production Reds, but I can't get him to accept that.

At 1:30 today I went to Newcastle to drop off birds for the sale and there was a sign on the door that said, "No sale today. Next sale ???".
Anybody know what's up?

Catching up, so late - but as I had to drill, dh went to drop off some stuff - apparently there was a family emergency. No idea on the specifics.
