We've used the cookie tin idea but w/ the cement block now for several years it has worked well for us.

What's the concept? Light bulb keeps paver warm, which keeps a pan of water unfozen?
Unhappy results with my last hatch....not a single chick hatched...9 Serama and 9 mixed Bantams. I think the thermometer was the problem. It was reading 99.5 but the real temperature was probably lower. They were alive when I removed the auto turner on day 18. That made the actual temperature a tad lower. Humidity was good. They didn't hatch on Aug 1. Candled tonight and had no movement. Eggtopsy tonight showed different sized yolks that were not completely absorbed and in several there was albumen like about day 19. Guess I'll be working on getting a digital thermometer kit for the Hovabators.
Three hens with eggs due to hatch on Aug 1 had great hatches.
I bet your granddaughter was heartbroken :-( I'm so sorry. I can't ever bear to crack the eggs open and look to see what went wrong.
i like that idea alot better than cookie tinsWe've used the cookie tin idea but w/ the cement block now for several years it has worked well for us.
Quote: yes, seems safer to me than the cookie tins too,, and the birds can stand near for warmth
Quote: Yes, she told her mom "I think I'm going to cry" when I told her mom about what happened.
Someone in the Harrah Newalla area listed 5 month old Serama pairs on Craigslist. I don't know that that is the route I want to go. I'd rather have eggs to hatch so Brinklee gets to start with them as younger chicks but I'm willing to explore that .....if it is someone an OKIE thread person knows.
i have seramas, and the eggs can be hard to hatch, i know quite a few serama folks, might see if June Suhm has chicks you could buy or eggs? If not i can save some once the girls start laying again, or you could go through Castle Delight Seramas, i've never had a problem hatching her eggs-
we had a showdown with the snake that ate my pet starling 2 years ago, heard a noise on the the porch and the dang thing was in the cage with the blind serama and hannah..hubby totally shocked me he came out grabbed it took it around the corner and did the deed...same one i had it out with under the porch

About to go look at some two week old Rhode island reds. Anyone know how to tell if they're production reds or bred to standard at that age? I won't be able to see the parents they were hatched out of bator.
At 1:30 today I went to Newcastle to drop off birds for the sale and there was a sign on the door that said, "No sale today. Next sale ???".
Anybody know what's up?
