***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Once you go Nekkid you never go back!!!! lol lol lol

Everything NNbreeder said, in addition 1/2 to 2/3 less feathers, no hair, easier to dispatch no pesky feathers getting in the way or dulling the knife. And just plain beautiful!

nnbreeder you go to the top of the page there is a spot called search, type in his name and it will give a column on the lt of the page for threads, posts, articles, user names, click on user names he is about 15 down, can't miss his Cornish avatar

Sooooo ticked. I picked up a bag of Producer's Pride scratch from Tractor Supply and this bag is a good 1/4 garbage, cane, sticks, briars, even rocks. I can't believe they expect people to feed this crap to their livestock. I'd like to report this to the dept of ag or somebody, because I have a really hard time believing they're within the legal limits of foreign material in their product... if there is a limit. Who would you report something like this to?

I have no intention of freezer camping 50 to 100 chickens at a time. The plan is to get heritage breeds, primarily, and a couple of dual purpose breeds, to add in, and harvest them, fresh, from the hoof. I want them to live long, healthy and happy, primarily organic lives. Then they go to the cone, fresh, from the yard, when we want to cook some chicken. I'm primarily interested in the Dark Cornish, simply because I keep reading that they are more pheasant like in flavor, having mostly, if not all, dark meat. I'm a dark meat guy. I don't want, nor would there be any real advantage, other than humanitarian, to getting the kind of meat birds, in the quantities we are looking to have, then slaughtering them young, and putting 100 chickens in a giant freezer. The idea is since we have room, we'll raise them fresh, and provide a healthy, humane alternative, to commercial chickens, to out families and friends, here locally. Not looking to make money. Never figured on doing any of this for profit.

Cornish x were bred to grow quickly and often after a certain age, their hearts and circulatory systems are overcome by their weight...early butchering is more humane.

Remember to butcher a day or two before cooking as that allows the carcass to go thru rigor and relax...makes for a more tender cooked meat. Also salt brining overnight helps to tenderize the meat by helping to break down the connective tissue.

There was an Okie that had real Cornish (not x's) his were awesome he put a lot of work into them.  He doesn't post anymore, haven't even seen him lurk in a looooong time.  Last I heard he had a horrible preditor attack
How do you do a member search? I know who you are talking about and about three phones ago I had his number.  LOL

That would be Al6517. He used to frequent some of the older get together threads like the "oldtimers" and the "front porch swing". He gave me great info on breeding by AI too.

LOL I know all of those that were around when I was posting on a regular basis are rolling their eyes and saying here we go again!!

Welcome back Doc Les! I missed your literary connections!

Thanks for all the info and links. I like to research alot before making up my mind. My husband wants RIRs but I'm pushing for NNs.

Certainly a call to the OK Dept of Ag would be a place to start. Someone there should know who would receive those calls....who the "watchdog" would be.

Tractor Supply needs to know that the corn stalks, etc are not "feed" for chickens and they need to make the purchase good.
