***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Another fiasco with my chickens today.... PRAY for me!  Gosh darn it why does this have to be so HARD???????
We have a small ac in the shed to keep the temps down a little for the chicks. The heat exhaust fell out of the window at some point today. I was too busy to check them and assumed the ac would keep them cool. Lost 95% of my breeding work for the last 8 weeks. So frustrated and mad at myself. Lost dome sfh chicks from Leigh shilling and a pair of Rees line cream Legbars. Half of my test breedings from my cl boy I'm growing out. I'm furious with myself and sick.

Having 4 kids alone is hard work. I know what it's like to not have time to check on things and just hope your plan is running smoothly. I'm impressed with how much you do and how much you get done. And I'm so sorry for your losses. I imagine it was very painful and frustrating to walk in that barn :( I'm ready for this summer time weather to pass. It's stressful for the chickens and those of us that love them.

@erinszoo I might be interested in some white pelts late next month. I'll be in touch! Thanks :)

@ksane Arlo woke me up to say today is the day he gets to give you the picture and the chickens. He's super happy. He's pretty sure these LF are gonna be spoiled with you ;) I'll PM you in a bit.

We had a peregrine falcon on our fence yesterday. At first I thought it was a SFH but I realized it wasn't at the same time my dog scared it off. This is out city lot, and we are in the middle of the city. Thankfully and kinda unbelievably all our chickens were fine. Arlo spent all day out with them after that. He put netting around some of the top and made more hiding spaces for chickens. Here's hoping it doesn't come back until after we move (this weekend)

@bardies I've seen the "micro pigs" but they don't grow up very micro lol Thankfully I seem to be drawn to the soft fuzzy animals-whether birds or rabbits. I can literally sit for hours petting the rabbits, sooooo soft!! And my precious little Serama boy- he just melts right into the crook of my arm and we can sit like that for hours also. You haven't read a book or watched a movie until you've had a sleeping animal on your lap :-D
When I was a kid I used to run my hands through a bag of flour over and over. It was so soft! That's what the rabbits feel like. My husband just says I'm weird.
Oh my gosh, Rinda :-( I couldn't take it if I lost as many as you have, poor babies. We've all done stupid stuff that resulted in losing birds-all of us. You do so much all the time and have so many projects going, plus 4 kids. Maybe you can take a step back and breathe for awhile. I don't see how you do it. It's an effort for me to keep up sometimes and my youngest child is 18.

Before family, I used to do that all the time - watch tv with a gimpy/feather plucked/rescue African grey on my lap. He doesn't get much lap time any more, I am afraid - but seems to have adjusted ok. I've had him for going on 18 years now.

Rinda, so sorry!

WOW! Thats so early! I poorly planned my hatch with moving. Basically the incubator, Arlo, the baby, and me will stay in the old house waiting for babies to hatch while the rest of the family goes to the land.

So, I definitely won't be upset to have them come a little early. But I really want to avoid opening the incubator so Im hoping they all show up within a day of each other. The brooder is set up at the land, Im just gonna keep them in the incubator for the drive. Seriously, poor planning on my part.

Ashley, every single one of my hatches in that Brinsea were on Day 19-20. Never had one go over that, not that I can recall. They'll hatch right about 24 hrs after they pip, like clockwork. I so hope you have a good hatch!

I have a smaller brinsea.... but I had hatching (one egg pipped, three were in mid zip) under a mama that was supposed to be shown that evening! (talk about poor planning too, but in my defense, I only found out about the show a week and a half before it happened). I wasn't convinced that she was being a good mama either...pecking that didn't seem like it was 'helping' pecking - and the chick didn't like it either. Anyway, I was going to snatch them and put them in the incubator to finish. Was trying to figure out how to do this without messing them up...then it occurred to me... just bring the little brinsea to them! So they went from under mama to incubator in a flash. Too bad there is no way to power your incubator in your vehicle.
Hope it all works out!!!!

I'm not too worried. We're a family of 7 a few days without 4 of them???? That's a mini vacation  Seriously though I will be cleaning up the house and yard anyway. And we were supposed to be finished last weekend (before lockdown) so I wasn't concerned with unplugging the incubator for a bit. Oh well! It will all work out.

@ksane so far so good with the brahma. She was cruising with a cochin bantam when I got home and then cuddled up to her for bed. They've all been raised together so hopefully she will move on quickly. And I hope the 3 girls are settling in. I'm so glad they're with you. :) and I keep forgetting to ask what are the other ducks names?
