Where are you going to get fruit trees in the fall? I would so much prefer to plant them in the fall, but have never found any available until spring.

We have good luck with trees ordered from Stark Nurseries. They re guaranteed too.

I have a cousin that her family runs a nursery in Tahlequah & I also have a guy that works for us that use to be at the one between Muskogee & Ft. Gibson. I would like to get them local rather than have them shipped but will have to see. I also would like to plant them in the fall rather than the spring.

Elwood, did you wear a different "cool thinking hat" to the auction at Blanchard? I saw the back of someone in a hat and overalls, but since it wasn't your legendary hat I didn't think it was you.

I like the anatomy of a spider you posted. Particulary the labels on the various body parts

Carah - Happy Birthday on Tuesday! I will wish you Happy Birthday today so I don't forget on Tuesday.

First heat-related death. My beautiful blue partridge silkie Mihalik hen. She was close to four and had very heavy feathering, with the bigget crest I've ever seen. Will be watering heavily around the pens today. The heat didn't seem to be affecting anyone--no heavy panting, etc. All our pens and coops are in the shade.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I'm scared to death for my birds since all I have is silkies. I've been putting frozen juice bottles in their coop and giving them frozen melon everyday when it's hottest. So far so good...but it sure is scarey! We've got a big church picnic with fireworks today and I'm going to have to sneak away for a couple hours to check on my chickens! Think I might have to make up another excuse so I don't sound to crazy! lol

Betsy - Sorry about your loss. I've got a thermometer in the shade, and if it's accurate, it was 105 in that spot at 11:00 yesterday.

Elwood & Buckguy - Thank you for identifying the snakes. The website of snakes in OK is now a bookmark. Heads are different, smaller, than the cranky bull snakes that seem to thrive up near the barn. Coloring is different too. With time and less adrenalin I can clearly see the differences.

In this awful heat, the chickens have lost all inhibition when I turn the hose into each pen. They stand in the spray and shoulder each other aside for a better spot. The ducks are faring well. They do the happy dance when I spray their pens, and most of them lounge in the pool or under the deck during the hottest part of the day. They are the only birds laying right now. I haven't had a RIR or EE egg in days, but the ducks are still producing.

Let me know if they are willling to sell them in the fall and what kinds they have. Buying local is a great option.

I have ordered from Starks before and like their plants, but didn't remember or know they shipped trees in the fall.

Love the anantomy of a spider, I'll steal that one when I get home.

I gave my chickens fans and wading pools made out of big dog food bowls. They just get in them and stand there or even sit down in them. I've been considering getting a misting system to set up, once I get the coop finished, it can make a huge difference when the air is dry enough, especially with a fan.
Good luck with all the chickens in this heat guys and sorry for the losses. We got up to 120 last weekend and it was pretty scary, especially with my jumbo crosses and my baby chicks.

Anyone in the Tulsa area want to sell me some fertile eggs.

We have our first broody hen and I want to let her have a clutch. We dont really want any more chickens (maybe one more hen).

We have a place for the chicks to go. We can borrow our rooster back for a few days and use those eggs, but I really like how the girls are doing and I am not sure if I want to add a rooster to that.

Starting eggs under a broody hen with all the heat will probably not be a pleasant experience. When air temps are over 105, the eggs just cook. Exploding eggs make for a smelly mess. Hens in a nest box can get too hot also.
