Robin, I haven't heard that, but I posted a link a while back about new regulations that were passed requiring feed manufacturers to use no off-label ingredients. In other words, since abnormal growth is an off-label usage for some antibiotics then antibiotics can't be included in feed for commercial meat-animals. Currently we can get antibiotics for the labelled purpose of antibiotics, but they can't be fed to animals we eat in order to stimulate weight gain.

Shakespear and I have been arguing for some time over the gender of this one chicken, I kept saying she was a pullet and Shakespear ought to treat her kinder, he keeps insisting she is a boy. Gary took Shakespears side, saying he trusts Shakespears judgment on gender over mine, hurting my chicken whispering feelings!

Anyway I am just about to admit Shakespear was right. I hope he is since he carries darker Fm coloring then any other boy I have had. Just need to check him out for Sc, that is sometimes really hard to tell for sure on carriers.

ok, so on the antibiotics, is this something we need to consider have a good supply set back, or is this geared towards the commercial side? @hotcurltr @Kyzmette thanks for the info, the way some people were talking i assumed we would lose antibiotics for small farms...

@NanaKat saving the info on the amoxicillan, i am on a few chicken groups on facebook, this was the description "My chickens are sick with respiratory infections now one of my girls eye is swollen shut I don't know if one of my other girls or roo pecked it or if she scratched it or if its from her sinuses I have NO money all I have is apple cider vinegar and amoxillin capsules for fish that I use for my rats does anyone know if I can use that and put it in their water or something" i recommended tylan-

you duck folks - what causes a duck to mouth breathe and unbalanced walking, everytime she stands she tips over

My layer group got to free-range all morning. The had a wonderful time. I wish I could have let them stay out all day, but DH took me to see Interstellar, so the chickens had to go back into their yard. I've seen too many stray dogs recently, and I worry that one or more will wander up to the house.

Here's my splash Ameraucanas roo calling the girls to come out and eat grass. They hesitated, so he put on a display to coax them out. They nearly trampled him after he quit crowing.

The folks on the goose thread recommended brewer's yeast pills crushed on the feed when my rescue geese were showing those symptoms. It worked. Might try it on your duck.

hi guys! a question- does any one know where i can get some either goose eggs for hatching or baby geese around here?

i really don't want to order them online at this point. I have one goose and she has a bunch of ducks to keep her company but i sure would like to have a few more. they are pretty awesome animals.

my goose had a similar problem a few months ago. she started off as drunk walking then barely walking falling over and not eating. by the time i was able to fish her out of the pond she was floating almost all the way on her back. i looked it up and i don't remember what it was called but its something to do with intestine infection based on the symptoms. and there was no treatment. now, i don't know if thats what it really was because i chose to take care of her on my own without going to the vet. and TLC basically is what i did. i never had to deal with a sick bird before so i was really just winging it. when i brought her to the house she actually had tears running down her face :'( so she lived in one of my bath tubs for a week or so wrapped up in towels. i fed her medicated chick starter and had a bowl of clean water at all times. i also added a dewormer a couple of times to the water. after a couple of days she started to get better, eating, drinking and honking. and this is the cute part - when i brought her to the pond she ran toward the other birds and they ran to her. was so amazing to watch them reunite! they were making all kinds of noises, doing little dance moves and splashing. i cried like a baby.

anyway, i don't know if i actually did something that i was supposed to do for her illness or was just lucky. but maybe this helps

That story made me cry. My geese are as special to me as my chickens and I've had more things happen w/ them to treat than the chickens. How is yours' doing? Ducks and geese get niacin deficiency really easy, if not getting enough greens or not getting it in their diet when they aren't getting enough greens. It causes them to become lame or even stagger. It looks like they've been injured. (And I'm sure sometimes it is injury). Anyway, if they aren't eating make sure you tube them. Brewers Yeast contains all the Niacin they need. I feed it to all my critters(chickens too). I get a 50 lb. bag at the feed store. The tablets will work too, or Niacin vitamins. Kale, Romaine lettuce is good if they are eating. Fill the tub or something(we used the horse trough) deep enough that they have to swim. It will help, if they are able. I've had one that couldn't. Swimming, vitamins and TLC is what saved Sammy. You probably remember when she hurt her back, when Glenn tossed her over tne fence thinking she fly down. We came so close to euthanizing her, but Glenn was more stubborn than I usually am and insisted she'd get better. He tube fed her until she could eat and swam her everyday. Poor Alex is her mate(he had lost Little Britches) and I don't know if he could take it if something happwened to her. He never left her side and had to come in w/ her when we were tube feeding her, until she could eat on her own. Let me know how your duck is doing? I have 4 babies in the brooder that I had w/ a hen and her chicks, but they grow faster. I'll download the picture and see if it turned out. Whoops
