***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Does anyone have young chicks available in the Tulsa area? Or know if atwoods still has them? I'm trying to get my broody hens off the nest. (My rooster is about 10% effective right now, so no chance of hatching our eggs.)

I'm in Coweta. I have Black Copper Marans, Russian Orloffs, mottled orpingtons, and a few silkies available. If you are wanting day old chicks for broodies I have a batch that hatched Monday that may work, or I'll have a new batch hatching in 2 days.

How long after you can hear the peeping will they hatch?

I have always heard up to 24 hours.

I know I have a shrink wrap problem so I don't let mine go that long WITHOUT ANY progress, I don't let mine go more then 8ish hours without progress.

We have had some hard losses this week...
I had an owl attack several days ago killing a nice Buckeye hen that had somehow escaped her pen during the night. We have cooped up tight since. The owl returned night before last and actually pulled a young juvenile thru the 2 x 4 inch wire cover killing it and injuring another young bird. It was definitely an owl by the claw markings in the mud in front of the coop.
That injured bird had lost feathers and an eye. It passed today. Now I've added additional protection to the juvenile coop.
Then this afternoon I had to put down Robin, my last Rhode Island hen. She was seven years old and was obviously suffering from a large abdominal mass that was getting larger. She did not come out of the hen house today to free range with the other hens. I just could not let her suffer any longer.
