***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My neighbor, Jack, has some nice plum trees in his back yard where his largest chicken yard is. They are not sand plums. They are sweet, pink/purple in color and the trees have dark burgundy leaves. Last year there was abundant fruit but this year the rains knocked out most of the plums. :barnie
MJ, is the flesh of the plum red or purple? I have a burgundy leafed plum that has a round red fruit. Roger eats them before they are fully ripe :/ so I don't know how sweet they are. My grandmother had one with an oval shaped plum that made the best purple plum jelly. I haven't been able to find a tree like it anywhere.
Do you guys process your own chickens or have someone do it? If so, where?
We process our own. Some we pluck the old fashioned way, but most we just skin and quarter.
Some baby shots from today, they are still jumpy for the flash
Can you tell at this age which are pullets and which are cockerels? I think this last photo should go in the BYC calendar!

MJ - tell Jack the black-tailed buffs are still my favorite. Excellent personalities and really dark eggs.

I process my own. In about five or six weeks I'm going to see if people want to get together to process since a group near here ordered meat chickens. I've got a plucker. If someone can bring a scalder, we'll be all set. I've got tables, chairs, and I can make a bunch of ice for those who don't remember to bring ice in coolers. I don't have extra coolers, though.

Hercule's boy is doing great. He's loving this hot weather. I bet your babies can be outside already : )

Most times I can be pretty confident from now to a week or so forward.

Coral count me in on a processing day. I was going to pay to have them processed for us but my husband just got laid off so I will be doing them myself. I have a turkey fryer I usually use as a scalder- I can bring it if you think it will work?

We got the corgi yesterday, she's doing great - is actually at least 2 years old but has been in at least 4 previous homes based on her old tags. Enid, then Yukon, then Blanchard, then Bridgecreek area... She is doing GREAT! Over 50 ticks came off just this morning. Who knows how many came off during her bath yesterday.

Sad news though - something got into my juvie pen and killed the seven paint silkie youngsters. It left the solid white one, barred rock baby and momma silkie. Mixed bag there.... Argh! More patching apparently needs to be done.

Was putting the birds to coop last night when a young Bantam hen decided to play hide and seek in the barn before going into the coop. Although frustrating it was a good thing she did....because...behind the barn refrigerator was a Blue Wyandotte hen sitting on a clutch of 15 eggs. Definitely not the best place for her to hatch chicks....way too hot.
When I got her out and into a wall cage, I candled her eggs...really a collection of eggs from several hens. How she got the other girls to join her in her broody venture and how she got the eggs back behind the fridge is amazing. Only one of the eggs was still alive....so I put it under her. This morning, I gave her 8 chicks and removed the egg to the hatcher. She is much more comfortable and happy to have babies.

Roger had a doctor appointment in the city and we stopped in Nicima Park at Jim's Fried chicken for lunch. Swadley's has done a nice job with the building and Jim's chicken tastes as good as always.

Since getting home, I've planted purple hull peas, three more hills of squash and some more okra and radishes. We picked green apples to send to The MIL. She loves them fried with butter and brown sugar. To bring in the bees, I also prepped a bed and planted a seed mix of annuals and perennials. Next My order of day lilies arrived from Gilbert Wild nursery. Those are soaking in a bucket to plant this evening.

Coral, do you have any preferences on the male other then an sc carrier? (dark feathers, light feathers, fm skin, big or small bow tie etc...) Still not 100% sure what exactly I have in male sc carriers, but will give me an idea of who to rule out when I can get me, Gary and an evening (after dark) to give all the legs a once over.

I've been harvesting from the garden, it is doing well except for the squash and okra, I need to plant more of each of those. The garden is much smaller this year, I hope to expand it next year, love the raised beds they are working out so well.

I planted out 8 gogi berry plants just before "Bill" hit several looked really bad, but I have 5 still green and looking like they will make it. I sure hope they do, they looked so pretty when the lady and I exchanged plants. The 3 passion vine (from seeds from miohippus) are finally out and in the ground, they are looking good. @miohippus do I have to cut the dead vines back in the fall or will they grow out new from the dead looking vines?
