***OKIES in the BYC III ***

NanaKat - I wish I knew what to tell you to help little Prince Wilhelm. Can anyone else give their ideas on how to help?

Here is a recipe stolen, by permission, from another site.

To help a bird recover from illness, they need extra protein.. this formula really helps them with thier recovery

My Treatment is this

“” This amount feeds one bird””

Feed the birds three times a day for three days a mixture of

This mixture is what you will need for the entire three feeds…. It is not 3 egg yolks and 3 teaspoons of honey etc…. divide the contents into three

½ to 1 x egg yolk….. give the whites to the other hens mixed into their seed or pellets (depends a lot on the size of the egg yolk)

1 teaspoon honey…. .given for energy

2 x tablespoons yoghurt…. Given for calcium and also to make the bowel go back into normal production after this upset
Only use the plain yoghurt never the one with fruit or extra sugar in it, not good for the bird

¼ teaspoon calcium powder (if you can’t get the yoghurt)

3 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats…. To give substance to the feed, or use chicken crumbles or layer pellets but soften them with some boiling water first

Sprinkle of multi vitamin powder (only if you are not already giving it to them in their drinking water, don’t overdose) just a few grains will usually be enough for this size mixture

2 to 4 table spoons of apple sauce or grated apple, it must be grated not chopped up for ease of digestion

Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny

If the bird is not eating you will have to force feed... roll into small pellets the same size as a layer pellet.... and force feed, and then massage the neck in a downward motion to get it down into the bired crop, make sure your keep the neck straight, its really hard getting someting down a neck that is bent or curved, the bird may be too weak to eat or have lost the desire to eat…. Don’t hold back…. The longer it goes without this the worse it will get

If you must give it something to drink – only give drops onto the beak or use the crop tube to get fluids down the throat, don’t try and pour any fluid down a chickens throat, it will more than likely go into the air passage and into the lungs and end up drowning the bird

This will give the bird a large dose of Vitamin D, C and A

After 3 days cut back to once a day for 2 weeks, you should notice the difference in 3 or 4 days

Give other food also, chick crumbles, grower crumbles or layer pellets depending on the age of the bird etc
Also have fresh water at all times for the birds to drink in easy reach, remember it is not well so it may not go looking for the food and water, so put it just about under its nose so it can’t miss it

It depends on just how many chicks a girl wants to hatch.

My 11 yr old DD thinks all eggs should be hatched--- once she discovered hatching she said she will never eat an egg again, since every egg has the potential to be a chick. So cute to hear her argue her case! Hate to say it, but I am thankful the girls have slowed down laying. I am wore out from hatching nonstop since November (when we bought our first incubator). A few months off will do me good!!!

I think that we will shut down the incubator just long enough to clean it good and then reload it. I like doing custom hatching most of all because I don't have to brood them out!

Now if you hatch late chicks then they will be point of lay in the spring and will fetch a premium price but brooding through the winter can pose problems too.

They sound wonderful. How easily confined are they? Would a 4' fence keep them in the chicken's back yard?

They are not a heavy breed so they can fly fairly well. Ours stay close to the house but will roost about ten feet up in the trees that we have. Clipped wing feathers would keep them grounded if they started to wander.

Well, we're going to have to have a covered pen. My Cochin and Silkie chicks are just tiny babies so it'll be a few months but I'm hoping to have the pen done/covered in the next few wks. Still deciding how to do it. I've clipped wings before, I'd just rather not. Makes me feel a little bad and they grow back so fast anyway.

Edit: Forgot to ask-do any of you use diatomaceous earth? And where in the OKC area can I get it?

Just got back from Cements auction. Picked up another nice pair of RIR bantams. Picked up a Mill flur Dccle (spelling) rooster. My wife seen some of these at Michaels a few weeks back and bought her a trio. I liked the rooster tonight a little better than the first roo, so up graded her trio while she wasnt looking. Got to see some BYCers. jcatblum, michael, Buster, Got to meet Doc, seen Peaches, seen others but my memory dont allow me to put their names on here, sorry guys and girls, some days I dont remember my name. Guys I rode down with from Clinton tried to buy some guenies there. They got high quick and some people from Weathorford bought all the keets that jcatblum brung. A guy come up to us before we left and we followed him to his house and picked up some he had hatched. So all was not lost on the guinie hunt. The one guy I rode down with is on a duck buying bynge. He picked up 17 at this auction. I think he has close to 80 now from 3 auctions in less than a month. We unloaded them when we got to his house. Thats a lot of ducks. I know one thing, fat men and heat dont mix well. I should have lost 5 pounds as much as I sweat this evening. Well I better get off here and get ready for bed. Was good seeing you guys down that way today. If I dont stroke out from the heat, I will return.

Not in the okc area. But I purchase mine @ country feed store in chickasha--- it is also called the apache co-op. If you can't find it in okc just make the short drive down this way. You could always come on the 1st or 3rd Saturday so you could enjoy the cement auction @ the same time!

nnbreeded my DD began her hatching adventure only wanting to sell pol hens but I think it is a HUGE amount of work on me. We have the space to raise them up @ the barn, but I think selling birds right out of the incubator is MUCH easier!
Cowboy glad you were able to score some guineas with your friend. I am pretty sure I spoke to the guy who had those guineas, he said he sure was kicking his self for not bringing them to the sale! I told DD she may never fetch a price that high again so dont get use to it!

Michael,
They must LOVE the shade of those plants. That's exactly how I want to do my Turkey Run. What kind of plant is that? That's not grape vines, is it? (I'm ignorant when it comes to plants). That would look so cool to have all around my turkey pen and it would be great shade.

I think he said they were grapes, but if you are looking for a quick good growing vine w/ thick cover and will take the Okie heat, I would do a gourd. You would have to replant it each year, but the times we have had gourds they have grown insane.
