***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So sorry for your loss and trauma.

I hope you are able to take care of the preditors.

Thank you, Kassaundra. I had some shotgun lessons last night and I went walking with my handgun earlier. I have never had to kill anything before, so I am a bit nervous. :0}

I use a pellet gun to shoot all the freezer camp candidates, I know not the same since mine are point blank and restrainded. But it is over in seconds to moments. Breathe, take aim and be mindful of what is beside and behind your target. Don't rush your shot, remember is has to be done, b/c you still have chickens they will come back for, and I'm sure you will be getting replacements.

Thank you, Rinda. The one body we did find was the sexlink we got from you. She is the one in my profile pic and that is my daughter snuggling her. She named her Phoenix - Nixie for short. The dogs broke her neck and then just left her for my daughter to find. I am so angry - and so unexpressibly sad. One of my silkies got so scared she laid an egg in the run. I am mad at the dogs, but more angry at the owners for not containing their dogs.

Do I need to keep the injured one inside? I have her treated and antibiotic ointment on the wound. I had to put a gauze pad and vet wrap around it because she was eating the gel. (She was inside last night.) I was planning to change her dressing morning and night. Is that enough? The birds are just so lonely separated and the Legbar is not picking at the wrap.

Oh, so sorry it was Nixie! I would change her dressings for 3 days, morning and night, and leave it open after that as long as no one is picking on it. You don't need to keep her separate now that the danger of shock is past.

Old age caught up with my Galahad last night, couldn't have asked for a sweeter bird, and am thankful Coral shared him with me! @Poco Pollo

Condolences on Galahad, so sorry to hear!

I am so sorry! I would get the injured on penicillin as a precaution-

Can I get it from Tractor Supply or do I need to go to a vet to get it?

Yes Penicillin is a good idea. You need a LARGE gauge needle to draw the med out. Pen-G is the one my local store carries, you need at least an 18 gauge needle and shake it REALLY well before you draw it up, it is really thick. You have to ask for it, it's in their locked refrigerator and must be kept refrigerated.

yes tsc has it, here is dosing info

That's it.

@artsyrobin - so sorry about your rooster! Sounds like he had a good life. Also sorry about the recent dog attacks for i-love-my-honey. We heard quite a racket in the coop at about 3 AM on Monday. There was a huge possum in the coop. All the chickens were fine, the possum was not, and I was feeling better about my husband spending money on a new pistol. I guess having your flock right behind your bedroom window is not a really bad thing. Just annoying when your rooster has finally decided he's grown up.

our rns and coups are right off the porch- yep it can be noisy at times, but we didn't want to battle the weather to get to them- i enjoy the voices i hear- awfully quiet without galahad

Robin, so sorry to hear about your beautiful Galahad.
Old age caught up with my Galahad last night, couldn't have asked for a sweeter bird, and am thankful Coral shared him with me! @Poco Pollo Shasta hangs out with the piggies most of the day. She's laying better than many of my younger hens.
It is nice to see Shasta with her friends. As a Blue Birchen Wyandotte she carries the egg laying history of her mother...a Blue Wyandotte hen who is still laying at 5 years of age. Her father was Beau...my Columbian Wyandotte.

We had a bad attack today. 5 out of 7 dead or missing. My poor daughters are just heartbroken! We had two Sikes that were my babies, an Americauna, and a Barred Rock that are missing (I assume swallowed whole as there is no remnant but a few feathers). There was one sexlink lying with its neck broken, but otherwise undisturbed. My honey gave me some refresher shotgun training for when they come back (thinking it was two dogs that I saw yesterday). If and when they return they will not live long.

One of the two left is just missing some tail feathers and one with a large wound on her backside. I used betaine and Veterycin before putting antibiotic ointment on it. She is in the house in a small box. She is eating and drinking well. Do I use Tyan or Sulmet? I cannot remember which is for what...

Sure hope several turn up after their fright and sorry to hear about the losses. The girls are in my thoughts as they deal with losing cherished pets. Antibiotics would be helpful..try Penicillin.
Hope you get the dogs responsible.

We have had a huge hawk circling and swooping in for a snack. Early this morning, the bil was waiting and got a shot while the hawk was descending on a young juvenile...nailed him.
