***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Had to remove a tree stump since it was right where we wanted to put a raised bed ... got the raised bed in and planted, and did one yesterday. Want to make one more 4x16, but supposed to rain the next 2 days ... so guess we will have to stay in the house and get something done in there for a change instead. lol

Last picture is our chickens with their coop and runs. Just recently got it moved and you can where it used to sit from the bare spot in the yard. Don't think it will take too long to grow back in.

Hauled 18 5 gallon buckets of poop to top off the raised beds. Planted 18 tomatoes, 12 peppers, 4 cabage (it is actually to late to plant them, but they were free from the plant store), radish, cukes, malabar spinach, zucchini, and okra. On top of the last two days before of replanting a 30 foot flower bed making it a hummer / butterfly buffet, and weeding another 20 foot bed and digging holes and planting another 16 tree / bushes.
Thats a lot of trips carrying those buckets! Cabbage will still do okay...mulch them with straw or dry grass clipping mixed with some wood chips to keep the soil from heating up. Pull that back some as the cabbage spreads the lower leaves. We have held cabbage in the garden until late June by mulching and using some shade cloth in the hot afternoon. We planted ours by April 4...later than usual.

Great looking garden and I like your trellis for your plants. You were wise to leave plenty of room between your beds for mowing, moving a wheel barrow and utilizing your tractor. Save your grass clippings and leaves to mix with the barnyard poop for compost for next year....mom called compost "black gold". Hubby uses the tractor to turn our pile several times during the summer and early fall. We mix in the soiled hay too. He then moves the nice "finished" compost to a convenient location in the garden and begins a new pile by the barn.

Where in the world do ya'll get your energy?! Just reading it gets me tired! Not kidding. I love trees so I pointed out where I wanted 17 more for this year and my daughters and grandkids planted them.

some of them were replacements for blow downs last fall.

Funny. I wish that was all I had to do. But I'm young (and I say so or youngish) and have a new place. Work 12 hrs a day on the road then when I get home I have A LOT of catch up to do. Got 2 full days at home this past wk. got up at 4 just cause I didn't want to go back to sleep and wake up to late with a hurtin back, and went to the incubator. Waited 2 hrs to Wake the GF to find the stuff she put up while I was gone.

Anyone else had nough of this liquid sunshine!?!
Thought I had the girls high nough but had to make a pull this morning cause it was getting over the lip of the feeder

Yeah, we are still in process of trying to finish our coop build but can't really get out there to work with the rain. Also hoping my garden beans don't get drowned and moldy. Ugh.

That is a nice accomplishment! Also, just wanted to tell you how impressed I am when I see the clothes you make for your little naked chickens! Tailor made, so great! Read your interview and couldn't believe you even made your own wedding dress ... really a talented woman. Just wanted to say hi.

Thanks, the nakeds keep me on my "designing toes" for sure! lol (I don't do much designing of human clothes anymore, but am totally addicted to Project Runway)

Founds some buddy chicks for my one legged peeper at the auction last night. Amazing how much more messy 7 chicks are than one chick with a bad leg! He seems quite content with the new arrivals even though they are a few days older and a little bigger. There were some very cool large fowl birds there, but I left early (9pm) when they were just finishing up the eggs and chicks to go have ice cream with the family.

My chicks are losing their down feathers. They are about 3 weeks old. They seem to be picking and preening a LOT, and a couple of them have a red spot under their wings which is why I'm a little concerned. Is this normal when they molt, or could it be mites? Stress? They seem to be eating and drinking just fine, active, and dust bathing a lot, too. Are mites pretty obvious, or hard to see? Also, what is everyone's favorite mite treatment, if it comes to that?
