***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Lots of thunder and lightening last night with 1/10 inch of rain. Both dogs dove under the covers when the thunder and lightening started. ...that's 170 pounds of dog...reminds me of the old song...put another log on the fire...and another dog on the bed.
Chickens are loving the change in temperature.
Had a Blue Cochin x Wyandotte bring a clutch of chicks out of hiding in the back of the barn...so far I've counted 8 new chicks.
Eggs in the incubator are due to hatch today thru the 11th. This includes the duck eggs due on the 11th! Wish me luck on those..never hatched ducks before.

Good luck! I may have nothing as fun or exciting to report yet (until I get my quail) but I love seeing all of yalls chickens and ducks and other animals and it just makes me even more anxious for next year to get here!

Best o' luck with the duck eggs Nanakat. As much hatching as you do I don't see where you'd have much problem. Just remember the slight humidity difference. (I think that and days is the only difference)

Same question on pigs. My current plan is to butcher this evening soak it over night in cold salt water. Flush the water and pig add ice and make a brine. Let it soak all Friday and over night throw it in the pit Sat morn. I can't cook any later than sat. I'm leavening for work after that.

How did that turn out?

I just had to share this. My son had a friend over after school today. I went in his room to check on him and found this! Lol, doing what boys do...playing iPad games and taking chicken selfies.

Thankfully Tori, our bantam Cochin is good sport and doesn't mind showing off feathers for a few selfies!

Pretty dern good. I put 2 bantam Cornish in there too. 1 shoulder was dry but that's why I did a practice to figure out the heat on my pit. I tried to pick up 10 degrees. It took a while then a put a flaming log in there instead of coals and it stayed up 40 degrees for a couple of hrs. until I dug it out.

Okay, baby ducks and chicks are hatching today.
The ducks are supposed to be Pekin (white), but these babies have black feet, legs and beaks as well as black and yellow down. The eggs were the same size as a large hen egg....any idea what breed they might be.
Cutest little buggers ever!

Another baby zipped just after the photo was taken so three out of 6 so far.

Update, third duckling is drying and appears to be doing great. 3 more eggs to go.
4 more chicks have hatched.
