***OKIES in the BYC III ***

You know, I have no idea. I saw it posted on the expo schedule and assumed there would be chickens there like all the other horse, cattle, stock shows they cater to.

That will be a bummer, I was looking forward to it.

I did find this, appears that somebody is showing something, don't know if it will be open to the general public or not.

Sure hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving....and if you shopped Black Friday...hope you were successful.

Had our last fall calf born on Thanksgiving morning.

We sorted cows Friday for market. Sending ten nice cows that are 10 years to 12 years old to the Stockyards this weekend. They are bred to Angus bulls, good mothers, good keepers. Our herd plan is to cull at 10 years of age. Sometimes running a cattle ranch is tough. These were all raised here on our ranch and a couple had pet names.

One of our friends had Touloose geese in the show. We popped in to see them. Great looking birds.

The December show is always fun to visit. There will be a huge collection of breeds with a nice selection of varieties represented in each breed. The Junior section is always nice....good to see young people getting involved in showing birds.
I always enjoy visiting with the breeders of breeds I have. Many are willing to discuss Standards, feeding protocols and breeding questions. Take a notebook or tablet.

I got a baby duck for Easter 2018 :) His name is Duckie and he is a Rouen Drake

I have never had a duck before and he is truly amazing!!!! He was raised with 2 kitties that love to play with him and visa versa. I had NO clue how smart ducks are!!! He knows his most of the things my cats know. His name, no, come here, breakfast time etc lol.

We have a cat crate that we take duckie in when we go to friends houses, the lake and other places. He knows who certain people are and where is he....he just makes himself at home.

I had first discovered BYC when I startled googling stuff about having a duckling. The do’s and dont’s. Mostly about all the different kind of poop they have . BYC really helped when Duckie got botulism in June. It was so scary and I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. BYC has so much info and answered all the questions I had no problem and Duckie pulled through. This site is amazing!!!

Welcome to the OKIE thread. Sounds like Duckie has a great home.
Ducks are definitely intelligent and fun entertainment.
I have 27.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been on. Had back to back chicken massacres in late June. First a stray dog broke through the fence and killed a little over half the birds and about two weeks later something came during the afternoon while they were free ranging and wiped out all the rest. That last one was weird. I’d been outside and everything was fine, I went inside and after about 45 minutes looked out the window to see feathers everywhere. They had all been eaten so I’m thinking it had to be multiple predators. I can’t think of anything that would kill and (mostly) completely eat 12-15 adult birds In that time frame.

I’m shooting for new chicks in the spring. I’m putting a larger enclosed run on the coop and free ranging will only take place supervised. I’m also debating an expansion on the main coop but that might be a bit much to expect from me (and the budget) in the time allotted.

So sorry to hear about your losses! We just lost a duck to a hawk today, and I’m still reeling. Hope that your new setup keeps your new chicks safe!

Sorry about those losses. Sounds like your second attack was a pack of coyotes. They will destroy quickly and eat or carry off their kills.
There are several articles in the coop section where pallet wood is salvaged and used for coop construction/expansion.
