***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello Okie friends. Bea couple years since I have been on here. Just wanted to say hey nd at we are praying for all of you and the terrible weather woes lately. You have really caught hell lately. and our news said tonight more is expected.
I am still in Tn. Still wanting to be back there! lol My daughter and rest of family are there. I am raiseing Tradtional Seramas now. Although I do have a few other breed pullet chicks on hand. Who can turn down spring chicks! A recent addition has been two indian runners(both turned out to be males!) and four buff orpington ducks. They are to young to sex yet.
Special shout to NanaKat! So glad to see you still on here. Hope you are doing well and dry soon.
:frow:frowRight back at you @Okla-doodle-doo !!!:frow
was thinking about you just the other day as I was enjoying some flowers in the garden.

Fellow OKIEs...hope your wet areas are drying out and Please report in to let us know how you are doing!

We got 14 inches of rain in Meeker in May and several more inches since. While the house and barns are on upland on the farm, the pastures are lower...all creeks have run out of their banks and we lost two water gaps. Repairs were easy, but the chain saw was necessary to cut out big limbs.
The tornado in our area took a tree by the house and several in the pasture, but a neighbor lost a barn and another the front porch.
Hubby and his brother are putting in a tinhorn on the property in Prague because the low water crossing we had is ruined. We have cow/calf pairs to bring home and can't get to the loading pen until this repair is made.
The plants in the raised beds in the garden have been struggling with all the rain and the huge weed crop. Mowing has been sporadic to say the least. Finally got my okra to come up!

Chicks are still hatching from the breed pens. Stopped collecting the Barred Wyandotte pen...great fertility and hatch rate. The CW pens are doing better since I retired Grandpa in Pen 3 due to low fertility....which was expected. What did hatch are lovely chicks.
Baby pictures...the last hatch had Barred, Blue and Columbian Wyandotte and a few Delaware. CW and barred chicks.jpeg

And the big tub brooder has a mixture of ages. The bigs go to the barn today. I've been slow moving them out because the transition pens have been too wet to receive chicks... the rain backs up the process.

What ever the cause for the change in our seasonal rains...be it global warming or simply a weird jet stream...this is the new life in Oklahoma.
Sure hope everyone is doing okay!

10 weeks old and getting more time out in the yard. I really like those Lakenvelder Roosters too bad they’re a small bird that lays small eggs. I’ll keep them around for variety and yard art.

I got a call from McMurray, their hatch couldn’t fill all their bantam orders so I’ve been bumped to next week.

I came across this picture the other day. It’s my great great grandmother Caldwell and her flock at their home around Milburn. No one is sure of the date but she died in 1960 at 80. I’m told she would have rather been out with the chickens than with most people. I knew I got that from someone.

What a Treasure!

Had a coop break in last night and lost about 20 birds. It looks like brute force was used to pry a section of the run up and I just had the coop door pulled shut so secondary entry was easy. I’ve got the remaining birds back in the grow out pen as that coop will comfortably hold what I have left. I’m beside myself as I had made improvements (or thought I had) since the flock massacre 2 years ago.

I’ve canceled my chick shipment that was coming next week and the I’ll wait till I’m in a better mindset before I reorder. I think I’ll plan on a complete rebuild this summer and try to keep the remaining pullets in the smaller coop for now.

So sorry to hear this! Were these your Lakenvelder?

Did you see evidence of what predator did the damage?
Coons can rip thru chicken wire and are notorious for rampant killing.

I did a rebuild this spring. Went with 6 foot tall chain link fence panels from Tractor Supply along with some I had on hand. Topped it with 2x4 wire fencing with shade cloth panels. Pens are 10 x10 and 12 x12. Each of the 5 pens has coop space that holds 3 to 6 birds.
I got tired of those predator attacks and finally got busy when the bobcat arrived.

that's a tuff loss jr j. I had a coyote run across the pasture yesterday while I was outside in the middle of the day. I grabbed the 30/30 and took off to head it off. Got in good postition but was to out of breath to whistle and stop it. I missed.doh
