***OKIES in the BYC III ***

As for the garden ...I started my tomato and pepper plants from seed this year....several different varieties. Got them up to 8 to 12 inch high and set them out in the raised beds in the garden in late May. Dressed the beds with compost and they took off like jack rabbits!
At 18 inches, someone sprayed an herbicide in our area and wind drift carried it to the garden. The tomatoes, peppers and eggplant took a hit, but the squash, carrots, turnips, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, cucumbers were not affected.
We were just sick...could have been the highway crew or one of three neighbors...will never know for sure.
We went ahead and mulched with straw in all the beds and the tomato, pepper and eggplant are beginning to set fruit, but it may be fall before we see anything.
This is the damage from spray...the plant vine and leaves are curled up.

And here are a few recovering from the bottom...

The okra and beans were planted but not up yet...they are blooming now too.

Ordered 1/2 inch hardware cloth from the local lumber yard in Lexington, and we can pick it up in OKC ourselves today or tomorrow. Last couple of snakes in the coop got "marked." If they don't come back before they shed, they get relocated. Repeat offenders will not. If they come after my chicks, no free pass.

I moved the boxes out of the coop, I read snakes dont like amonia, so I spray the outside, I havent lost more birds, I cant let them kill my birds. I'm so fed up with them yuk

Making progress on the new coop. 4x12 feet. Under a huge tree. I'm thinking about making the top 2 feet hardware cloth all the way around for ventilation.. Probably 4 feet up for walls, thenView attachment 2252206 2 feet on top of that for the mesh. Sound good? @NanaKatu
What kind of roof line will you have...for 24 inch ventilation area, you will need an overhang on the roofline to keep rain, snow or sleet from blowing in and wetting the birds and the inside of the coop.
My vents are only 6 inches high the full length of the south wall. The over hang on the south is 18 inches.
Consider placing a low vent on the north side and a high vent on the south. A hinged panel used to open the north vent in summer and lower it in winter is versital.
As heat rises, air enters at the lower vent and pushes the heat out the top.
Vent holes can also be 1 inch holes drilled thru the exterior walls and covered or lined with your hardware wire to keep snakes or mice from using the holes as entry points.

Score! I found this antique radiator cover at the Habitat Restore in Norman. It came out of a really old sorority house. The long side is 7 feet

, so I can cut it in half and use 1 grate for ventilation on the bottom of the North side and the other half at the top of the South. There is also a smaller square grate on the other side that I can incorporate somewhere or save for later.

Tried to pull a Tom Sawyer today. Daighter and neice helped me whitewash the inside of the coop walls. They didn't fight over the job and I finished it. Also laid peel and stick vinyl flooring. Daughter

helped with that some. Looks better than my floors right now LOL.

Hello, i already posted this in the free rehoming thread but i thought i would add here in the oklahoma thread as well.
I have 2 free to a good home bantam cockrells in owasso oklahoma.
The first one is hershey. He is a silver duckwing bantam. He tolerates cuddles and hasnt been aggressive with any of our pullets or our 2nd cockrell. Im giving him away because our city doesnt allow them and i got him in a straight run batch of bantam chicks. He is approximately 3 months old now. I would like to give him to someone who will keep him and not eat him. When we let them out to graze in the yard my pullets follow him around and dont go far away. They feel protected with him near.
My 2nd free cockrell is what i can only guess is a black bantam cochin. His name is zilla, he is a little aggressive to my pullets but only when provoked (we have a fiesty sebright that has been charging at him). Again, giving away because of the city ordinance. He is definitely the beta rooster and has never picked any fights with my alpha. He likes to protect my frizzle on the occasion she roams too far from the main flock.
Im willing to rehome together or separately. Send a private message if you would rather get my phone number and correspond that way.

Glad to have you on the thread and good luck with finding them good homes! Is anyone complaining about them? If you enjoy the boys, maybe you could get them crow collars and bribe your neighbors with eggs.
