***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Gerald & I went to the Guy Rose Auction this morning ... well it was barely still morning ... around 11:15 am when we FINALLY arrived. We had hoped to get there early enough to take eggs and produce to sell. Unfortunately, we had too many other things that required our immediate attention in the morning ... like catching a goat that got out, putting duct tape on the recently planted pecan tree that was de-barked by the goat

and many other delays.

We at least arrived early enough to the auction to buy some prairie hay at the auction, said hello to fellow Okies: modernman, nnbreeder (& wife) and doubleostud ... traded poultry for a fainting goat too

I wish we had had more time to visit with fellow Okies, but was in a big hurry to get back home ... had to go to work this evening

I didn't even get to check how prices were going on things, but noticed that Les & Teva bought some beautiful birds & hay, and I think Chris said he bought some birds. We got extremely lucky on the hay ... first bales of prairie grass sold for $8.25 a bale and we got some of the same stuff for $4.25 a bale. I just wish we had had a bigger trailer to buy more ... we need more hay .... and we need to find some for Maribeth too

We had a bunch of baby muscovie ducklings hatch a few days ago. 2 Momma ducks abandoned their nests with 4-5 eggs left in each nest ... those eggs have been hatching, even with no momma on them

I guess it's still hot enough for them to continue to incubate.

Carla it was good to see you and Gerald. I didn't even think about it but if you ever need to you can put hay on my land if you need to make a few trips. I just live about 8 miles from the auction.

I sure would like to take a trip there & see that sale. Actually, I'd even like to see some green grass again. I don't remember the last time we had to mow ... everything is brown & crunchy that hasn't been watered. Gerald's plasticulture garden is nice & green though. Thank goodness for drip irrigation under sheets of plastic in rows!

Gerald & I are considering heading East with our big trailer looking for good hay. I doubt we'll go as far as Tennessee though ...

Sorry to hear about your MIL. My dad is still taking care of my mom with dementia and Alzheimer's. She's in the last stage of it ... has to be fed, changed, etc. He refuses to put her in a nursing home. She's going on 10 years now with it ... started right around the same time as 9/11. It has been an awful journey, although sometimes funny. Like the times when she'd ask people who they were. We'd tell her, and she'd immediately ask again. I remember that for several weeks, she'd constantly ask my dad if he was the President. I wish

My dad would have been a great president.

Thanks Chris! That's a great idea! Gosh ... I sure wish I had bought all the rest of that prairie hay then. I expect hay prices in Oklahoma to skyrocket soon.

You are sure lucky to live near that auction. If I lived near it ... I probably would spend all my time and money there every Saturday morning

Good Saturday to all.

So what sort of critter breaks the end off an egg and eats the insides? Sometimes the entire egg is crushed, but often it is just the end. Seems to happen at night, usually.

Yes, they make incubators. I highly recommend them, NOT If you get one, get something on paper about there wanting to make any problems right, oh yea, If its like mine be ready to discard lots of unhatched eggs.

Loaded chickens for nothing, no auction. Guess I should have checked first.

Yes maam, thats what I did. Had a good time, Met Richard (slipsocket) talked to modernman, nnbreeder (& wife) and doubleostud. Funny story about doubleostud. He saw me today and said bet you dont remember me. Took a minute but then it hit me. He and I went to college together. He is either awful old, or I went to college late in life, you guys figure that out

Was really good to see him. Now that I know where he is I plan on bugging him some. He is one of the good ones, always enjoyed him at school. Back to the auction, had a good time, bought all their home grown mators second week in a row. Bought and sold about the same amount dollar wise. Like I told my wife, If you dont factor in the 70 dollars in gas, meals and the trip to Blanchard to NoCityBoy to get guineas, I broke even today.

OkCarla, was that $4.25 for square bales! Wow thats high for praire hay isn't it? They seem to have plenty of hay here. The only problem they have had is being dry enough for long enough to get it cut and baled!

I applaud you father. I don't know how he does it. I'm not for sure we will survive this one. She acts so differently around daughter and plays her along. Its makes it hard when we can't both be on the same page. Its hard for me to line her out for 8-10 hours a day in one direction, and then wife come home and be tricked into allowing a whole different direction to be taken. Thats why I said I can't tell which is dementia which is not. Looks to me like dementia would be the same pattern consistenly. But I'm no shrink so I am about to throw up my hands! I need another chicken sale!lol
