***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Grace'sDad :

A couple of months ago I thought I lost one of our Polish/Silkie cross hens. Located her about two weeks later on a hidden nest. Thought I might as well let her try to hatch because she was so determined. Well she hatched five chicks (out of 8 eggs) and they are funny looking Polish/Silkie (bantam) X Brown Leghorn (standard)

Had the other cross hen go missing last month and sure enough she was on a nest. She was joined by the Americana hen and looks like they may have hatched 6 or 7 chicks this weekend.

Don't know if anyone caught the little black spot on the grey hen's wing....take a closer look!

I don't know about health issues, but all my chickens including my one roo all wade in their water dishes, they started when the heat started so bad.

thanks for sharing- how much electrolytes should you add to a gallon of water?

That is hard to say it is really based on what eletrolyte you are using. I would have to say read the package. I use a product called 40,000 volts its a liguid and only requires 1/2 tsp per gallon. I know alot of folks use the Vital and I think it 1 TBS per gallon but i'm not sure.

Thanks everyone! I am doing everything I can to keep them going, I wonder if there was some underlying reason I lost the one but couldn't find anything on her to indicate anything else.

How is everyone doing today? I am bored silly!

Just read the article in the online mag Exhibition Poultry <http://www.exhibitionpoultry.net/> on Reducing Heat Stress in Poultry - good ideas! So far we have had pretty good luck with keeping the drip hose wrapped around the run and an occasional spraying of the cotton sheet we have stretched across the west side of the run. We covered the run and coops with a large tarp/tent with the first 100 degree day. The girls seem to be ok. It breaks my heart to hear of all the birds being lost to the heat. I'll keep adding chickens to my prayer list along with our son (in Iraq) and daughter (flying blackhawks at Ft. Rucker) - and all the rest of the armed service folks defending our rights and freedoms - to raise chickens as we see fit!
