Do you know who owns the dogs? Talking to the owners my help, or it may not. I don't know about trapping a dog, but surely someone else on here can give you some pointers on that. If you live in town, you might try calling the animal control folks and report the animals that are at large. On the other hand, you can buy a reasonably inexpensive pellet gun or shotgun at most gun shops or pawn shops. Even some WalMart stores are carrying shotguns again. So sorry about your losses.

Thanks, upcdayz. We don't know who owns these dogs, but there are some low budget apartments about a 1/4 mile from here. We chased some of the dogs last night and they all ran in the direction of the apartments, but to no one area in particular. We have called animal patrol and they promised to send someone out today, but, of course, the dogs are all gone now. That is kind of why I would like to trap a couple of them. So we could hand them over to animal control and let them find the owners. I hate to think that it will take shooting them with real lead, but... bbs don't work.

if they are starting to run in a pack and found easy prey they will continue to return so lobg as there is at least 2 dogs left or until your birds are gone. there are really only 2 solutions. I prefer not discuss either in a written format.

Or possibly tired of fetching her every time she gets out of the fence lol Which is every 10 minutes with goats. They can teleport over under and through fences.

I'm afraid that it could only get worse. 2 labs and a lab mix first killed Jack's pregnant doe and tom turkey, injured the buck and he eventually died in a later atack. Finally Jack shot one while they were wiping out 46 Austalorps. Got the owners name from the dog tag and the Animal Control officer worked with Jack and the neighbor. Neighbor was required to pay for the losses which he did by filing with his Homeowner's Insurance. His dogs had got out several times and he said he had no idea what they were doing when loose. The other two dogs were euthanized. So sad for the dogs and the deer and birds that died.
The dogs coming to your place may be strays though. Do you have Animal Control in your area? These situations often have no happy outcome. I would hate to shoot a dog but...........

During our two month stay in the country near Inola, we got a goat for weed control (But she didn't eat very many weeds, turns out we got a very picky goat). Anyway. To keep her from wandering off we put a collar on her, with a long lead line, and tied her to a tractor tire. It was light enough she could drag it around, but heavy enough she could not drag it far. In the evening we put her in an enclosed pen. We had to untangle her a few times, but it worked great most of the time. But we were home all day and could keep an eye on her too.

We had neighbour dog issues. The neighbour to the north of us had mastiff, pit bulls, and mutts. He had privacy fencing, but major holes in the fencing so his dogs could come onto our property any time. We ended up putting an electric wire running around the outside perimeter of the coops and hooked up a charger and turned it up the the highest setting. It took a few times getting shocked, but soon these dogs never came on the place again.

I don't know how feasible this would be to do in your situation. But I recommend an electric fence, a shot gun, or a 22 gun. If they are running in a pack, they are most likely strays, or have owners that don't really care.

I've had multiple dogs all my life and wouldn't have them without hotwire. Super simple to set up, chargers are cheap for what you'd need and it's very effective. I use the ones only made to keep rabbits out of gardens and even 120 lb dogs run screaming like they've been hit by lightening lol If you use the lightweight ones it won't hurt your chickens if they touch it either, just scare them.

Wouldnt recommend a .22, cause if you miss the shell can carry a LONG way. Most folks have neigbors too close to get away with a .22.

Jack now has hotwire all around his property. Seems only bobcats can get in and goats get out!

Thanks for that note. I am still in my "living in the country" mode and keep forgetting that we now have to keep close neighbours in mind.

Smart cats and coons are tough to get rid of, and I am not aware of a fence that will keep a goat if it wants out, watched one that would use the corner of a 6 ft chainlink like a ramp it would run at the fence and start up going toward the corner then through the corner and over the other side. Goats can be very determined.
