Could very well be someone who could t afford to feed their animals anymore.

It looks like we should get another cutting off our pasture, but all hay is spoken for, I didn't keep much for us this yr since I only use hay for the birds. Maybe next spring I will let DD get a few young goats. just have to make sure I save enough hay for our own use. Think I saw 100 small square bales will feed2 goats. I have the guy bale my portion in small square bales so I can handle them on my own. Don't know what I would do with a giant round bale of hay!

now people have dumped birds off at Jack's! Hard times when you can't keep birds.

Happy Noon to everyone!
Well, we had another attack early this morning. 5 (yes 5!!
somad.gif
) dogs got into our fenced and gated yard and were trying to dig through our dog run to get to our feathered ladies! Makes me really want to do something drastic to stop these thieves. They have accounted for our losses of 8 birds in the last two months.

Guess it is time for some more drastic measures.

The leader of the pack is a big male black lab. We got him with a bb gun this morning, but I don't think it will deter him for too long. Will a trap work for a big dog?

Just got back from the vet. Conner has to stay a few more hours for X-rays. I think Vesta must have squished him last Friday. They were buddies for a week after Vesta was spayed, and she's been in the yard to play for an hour each day, but last Friday she was too rough and I had to put her back on pasture duty early. Conner is only 7, so he's too young to walk like an old man, but that's what he's doing. Think happy thoughts for the little guy. He's my snake fighting, rabbit chasing, best buddy dog I've ever had. Being confined will make him miserable.

Our vet is the closest vet, so I told him about the visiting goat. He doesn't treat goats, so he suggested I call animal control, which I've already done. He suggested I put an ad on Craig's List, which I've already done. He shrugged and said maybe I should make some fliers and hang them in town. I can do that tomorrow.

Do you know who owns the dogs? Talking to the owners my help, or it may not. I don't know about trapping a dog, but surely someone else on here can give you some pointers on that. If you live in town, you might try calling the animal control folks and report the animals that are at large. On the other hand, you can buy a reasonably inexpensive pellet gun or shotgun at most gun shops or pawn shops. Even some WalMart stores are carrying shotguns again. So sorry about your losses.

I imagine we will see even more people needing to rehome their animals as winter approaches. Many are tryig to hang on, it is only goin to get harder as hay becomes harder to find & continues to rise. I know I spend $200 a month on bird & dog food. If I acquire anything else that needs feed DH might try to drop me off on a country road somewhere!

Thanks, upcdayz. We don't know who owns these dogs, but there are some low budget apartments about a 1/4 mile from here. We chased some of the dogs last night and they all ran in the direction of the apartments, but to no one area in particular. We have called animal patrol and they promised to send someone out today, but, of course, the dogs are all gone now. That is kind of why I would like to trap a couple of them. So we could hand them over to animal control and let them find the owners. I hate to think that it will take shooting them with real lead, but... bbs don't work.

I understand. It's not pleasant to have to shoot an animal, but it sounds like you have a real predator problem with these. Not only do you have one that comes back repeatedly for your birds, but it has now brought its buddies along. It sounds like your problem with these dogs is escalating. Sometimes shooting them is the only solution, sorry to say. Let us know how it turns out.

I don't know about your setup, could you run an electric fence? DH is going to run one around my new guinea & peafowl housing he is building.

How about a paintball gun? Those things hurt when they hit you & the owner would for sure know that the dog had been in the wrong place @ the wrong time. Seen you can also pick up a taser pretty cheap--- if you wanted to catch the dog then call animal control.

Nanakat,
I have gone through just about everything out here as of this morning and re-arranged the breeder pens based on what I have and need,
I only have a few LF around and will be cutting the LF Cochins to a breeder trio for the fall / winter breeding season. So I have three hens I am waiting on Beth to confirm on first. They are 1 Black, 1 very nice slightly darker blue, and 1 nice lighter blue all 18 months or younger. I will likely have a few more Columbian Wyandottes before long just waiting to see what is what as I have some crossing over into the 10-12 week age and some younger ones. I am trying for 10 pullets and 1 back-up cockrell to raise out all others will leave at some point.

So at present the list is:
3 LF Blue, and Black Cochin (I think Beth is taking)
1 Trio Bantam Blue Wyandottes (I am pretty sure Amy is getting for her grand daughter)
1 Young Pair Golden Sebright,
1 young Pair Columbian OE bantams
2 Birchen OE bantam hens nice birds
1 full breeder pen of White OE bantams can be split into quads. (2 cock birds 7 or 8 hens)
1 Full Breeder Pen of BB Red OE bantams that are just outstanding. (1 cock bird 5 hens)

this is in an effort to make room for something I really want alot more than most everything else I have, you will be more than welcome to visit next srping to see what it is, but they will not be for sale for at least another 1 1/2 years.
