***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So my daughter has decided to do chickens for her 4H project. I have no idea what to do. There is not a chicken specific 4H club in our county, so we will be doing it as a project in our general 4H club. Soooo.... any of you more experienced with 4H? Where do I start? Do I have to have show quality chickens?

Platinum is gorgeous, but I am going to find me a dun and a blue to cross, just to see what I come up with. Hope I can find them from good quality breeders though. I think dun x and. blue, or dun x splash would be very interesting.

The ones I bought were Juveniles, but I do know he just hatched another batch of chicks recently. I am going to pick some up for a friend tomorrow eve.

all the ducks were standing there just staring- can imagine what they were thinking! my little pekin stood and stared for the longest time- imagine her thinking 'can i have a hat too???'

Kassaundra, Have you planted your fall garden yet? Is it too late to get one in? I have been planning on planting one but have had had time as of yet

Only part of it, I still have the majority to plant. I was going to plant this past week (my funny work schedule means my garden days are mostly mon-wed) but couldn't bring myself to plant out in 103 days. I am still planning on putting it out this coming week

I am not as accomplished as nanakat, but I would say there is still time, especially for the greens (since they are quick and can be harvested early) and roots since several of them (carrots, turnips and beets) get sweeter as it gets cooler.

What are your going to plant out?

Kass - How has the okra turned out? Been meaning to ask about that. I stopped at a roadside vegetable seller on HWY 3 the other day who was selling his for $3 per pound!

I may plant some carrots soon, too. Love them, but need to have more dirt brought in. I have raised beds and it has settled since last year. Didn't plant anything at all this spring, but would like to plant some fall veggies. In the spring I plan to go full-force again. Onions do well here, as do green beans which are more of my favs. Have grown peppers - bell, cayenne and jalapeno - and all grew like wildfire. Canned most of them, but dried some too.
