***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'm wanting to do a few hoops this fall too, but I'm waiting to see what actually lives and is producing enough to warrant protecting.

Comfrey is very controversial as a food for poultry (other livestock too) but it is extremely useful as a compost starter, fertilizer for the garden.

I have planted bocking 4, and want to get some bocking 14 and regular comfrey eventually. I think as with most things as a supplement for the chickens it would be fine (to many use it w/o bad effects) but a constant food source probably not. About the only one out there saying how bad it is suppose to be is the FDA, and forgive me if I don't take their word for much value. How many drugs have they said are safe only to have multiple lawsuits b/c they are then found to be dangerous.

Carl, keep up the good work! I found taking stress vitamins and drinking green ice tea has helped tremendously, i quit in March

cochins are as addicting as silkies, maybe more.... be careful you'll be building more and more pens for them!

Yes, I have some squash already planted and some tomatoes I transplanted around late July. I planted out snow peas last week that are up now. I am going to plant greens, roots (carrots, beet, turnips, radish), and beans if it ever drops below 100. I started brocc, cabbage, and cauliflower in the house a couple of weeks ago, and desperately need to get them out in the shade for a couple of days before putting them in the ground, but again the temps need to drop below 100 to do that.

How about you are you planting a fall garden?

I also planted out comfrey roots last week they are up and growing, but I won't harvest them this year, there is just time for one growing, so I'll let those self mulch this winter, harbor preditory spiders, and fertilize for next years growth.

My FB page has new garden pics I just posted yesterday.

I planted some pumkins from seeds we saved last year to see how they do, hope I got them out in time. I went to get some stuff yesterday (seeds) but they didn't have everything I wanted but I figure I will start out small since this will be my first attempt at a fall garden & will possibly set up a small hoop thing to give me a longer growing season.....

I will have to go look at your pic's. I still have so much to learn. I will have to google comfrey roots.

Sooner what seeds are you looking for? Our local supplier is having bulk seed sale at 30-40% off.
I know 1 oz. of Tomatoe seeds for example is under $1 right now and thats alot of tomatoes.. Corn, beans, squash, alot of different things.

the Pens will be an issue soon, I have something special coming soon and want to make room rather pens at this point. I am really debating on the LF cochins here though with the LF wyandotte and everything else I am really considering knowing the LF down to stuff I can turn out if I fence off 2 acres around teh other pens and let 30-40 dottes run I think I will be happier than tending to everything in small pens. I will keep most of the OE but the bantams I have coming will be in pens with th eexception of bathing and showing..

Hum, that could be nice to have for spring. I was looking for a type of squash for fall & there was a pea verity for fall too but can't think of the name. I don't really have to have them because I don't want to plant more than I can take care of.

i am always a sucker for cochins, spent the morning starting an expansion on my banty run (a bunch of little pens is really annoying me)- so i can get everyone merged before winter- captain and his ladies- cochins, and cochin mixes, then my cochins from mj and some feedstore cochins, may add the nn chicks also- so the total will be 15, and the run will be from an 8 x 8, to double almost 20 x 10- not including the coop- also am thinking on expanding my LF cochins to their own pen, i only have two of them, so might look at adding a couple more

sjarvis00, Do they have a list of what they have available? specific varieties? I am really paying attention to specific varieties to help solve specific problems.
