***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hummm... I'm really confused (again!) about Chicken Math... I thought we had it all straightened out but now.. We picked up 4 laying hens tonight along with a lovely fully grown rooster. We also have 9 young (hatched Feb-April) females and 5 RIR chicks we purchased at Blanchard auction this month (bought 6, one sadly succumbed to the heat). So does this mean that we have 5 chickens and some prospects?? And how does that add up if we have to subtract 10 from ... ahhh

shoot! Don't think I'll do any better at chicken math than I did in calculus! Rats.

A white pgymy, isn't taht like a white buffalo, supposed to be lucky PoCo? It would be if I was closer because I would give it a home!lol

Nice looking cochins Robin! Be tough and get rid of those extra boys, you need to keep some pretty pure ones for those pretty hens!OR think about it like this, what they eat in feed could go into that many pretty girls that will lay eggs and make more chickens!lol

Boy the news people are haveing a hey day with this new hurricane. Predicting the worst fallout in decades because of its path thru several major cities. Hope they are wrong as usual!

Gotta go help the daughter with a yard sale tomorrow. Hasn't rained yet so it proably will tomorrow! Yes I am a pessimist!lol

Enjoyed all the talk about fall gardens. I didn't realize you could grow more than turnips and greens in the fall. Guess I need to work up the rest of my garden and plant some more stuff.

I let my mottled OE out this afternoon to free range for a little bit. They are so pretty out in a group like that. I sure like mottled birds. Anconas are one of my favorite LF breeds. Don't see many of them . And I like the mottled houdans as a polish breed.

I am still amased at the way horses have bottomed out around here. There were some beautiful ones on craigslist today. One 4 year old palamino mare was drop dead goregous for $300! OOthers were $200-$300 for really nice horses. And its so funny when you see those ads and then someone post one for their horse and ask 2-3 thousand for it! Its like ,"didn't you see the other adds?" !lol

Okay,I'm off to bed,I seem to be rambling!lol, have a great night folks, someone set the alarm for me!

Michael, daughter just came thru here on her way to her new post in Calif. and she brought her chocolate lab/weimeriner mix pup - 8 months old. Smart dog, she jumped one time at the chickens in their run and they all flew all over the place but daughter scolded her firmly and she was good from then on. Its a good thing to catch them immediately if one can and correct the behaviour...if that doesn't happen, they become the killer dogs we have running around here. We've been keeping watch and are gonna catch 'em! Daughter is gone and her dog too..miss them. I can't sleep tonight either.

We too have a chocolate lab mix.

She went after the chickens once. We scolded her and put her in doggie jail (the dog run), and we have not had a problem with her since. She will even go into the coop to eat the scraps we put out for the chickens, but she will not bother the chickens.

She is still learning with chicks though. We bought some for friends last week and kept them inside for the night. My 3 yo opened the cage to hold a chick, and my dog took the opportunity to grab one. She didn't break the skin, but still the poor chick didn't make it. We scolded her and put her back in doggie jail.

Yesterday we bought ourselves 2 chicks, and my dog will sit at the crate watching, and wagging her tail. I will pull them out and show them to her, and she doesn't seem like she is going to try to get them. So I hope she learned.

Labs are pretty smart.

Good Morning Everyone!

Wow you guys posted some great stuff on bug repellent! I didn't get to talk to mom last night, she wasn't home when I called & I missed her call when she called back. Ha. I did talk to her DH & he seems to think it won't be a problem so for now it is a go.

Kassundra, if you DH can do it before then that is even better, but if you aren't interested in seeds(I couldn't tell) then I can just have my mom do it.
