***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Wayne...nice Icelandics. I've had moonplant (datura) for many year and have it growing in several locations around the house....love the smell and wtching the bees opening the flowers. We also found the wild jimson weed growing near one of the older barns. It is a smaller flower with a little more purple on it. Bethany in OKC has banned the plants due to recent incidents with teens ingesting the seeds and following hospitalization.

m.ruzycki :

hey guys, im trying to come up with an automatic watering system and have some ideas but not sure which i would like to try and what will be best for my set up. I would like to use a 55 g barrel so i dnt have to water as often but im also thinkin ahead to winter and dont want to be bustin alot of ice. I plan on gettn a tank heater but not sure which is better floating or sinkable. If anybody has any ideas or pics of what you are doing please post. thanx. Right now im using the 55 g barrel tipped upside down into a hot water pan with a spigot for filling and after its done filling i turn the spigot off creating a suction and it chugs out as they drink it down.

On the winter water idea, we used half of a 55 gallon barrel, cut holes for the chickens to stick their heads in to drink (used a saws all), made a top for it out of salvaged wood to keep them out of it, and used the floater heater, put it in the shed for the winter, so no ice busting at all, the one we have turns itself on and off depending on the tempature ( bought it at Atwoods, cost about 35 dollars last year), sure was nice to not have to haul water or break ice all winter.

That old and no hint of a comb I'd say female. I've got 16 Silkies that are now just 2 months old and the boys most definitely have huge very noticeable combs, the others (girls?) have none whatsoever-just like in your Silkie picture. My whites are my favorites. If you want I can snap a picture of one of the ones I'm calling 'male' and then of one of the ones I'm calling 'female'. Big difference in the 2.

I remember reading there was one in Guthrie, OK on Sept 2nd that started at 10:00 AM. Does anyone know about it?I wrote it on my fridge a month ago but haven't heard anything since.

Does anyone know about this? Where it is? Whats going on? I would most def be there!

Joe, will there be display cages for the sale birds at the Green Country Swap Meet, or do we need to bring our own? Will there be a pot luck lunch? Looking forward to it!

I would suspect one of the major three in your area. Coyote, Fox or Bobcat.

I know Edmond animal control says there are not Bobcats in the area but my FIL lives over on 74 and traps about 10 of them every year in close to Edmond. One that he was going to get mounted was so large that there were not forms made to fit it.

I have a friend that has some acreage in East Edmond.
Last year he killed over 20 bobcats and several fox and coyotes.

Oh goodie, now I get to worry about bobcats too?!? I don't know how I could possibly deter a hungry bobcat :-/

Oh Monty, I loved chit-chatting with you. I actually could stayed longer if I wasn't worried about the girls getting too hot.

They are doing fine, but they don't want to go in the coop. My other three were bossing them around a bit, but nothing bad. The new girls are sleeping outside on the roosts and on top of the coop. question: will they eventually decide to go in the coop? I don't like them just sleeping outside.

You will probably need to keep them inside for awhile until they get into the habit of where they need to be.
If they get used to being outside, they won't want to go in
side until the weather gets nasty. Some times not even then.

I don't think I can lock them in the coop with this heat. It's just too hot. The coop is only 12 x 10. It has a screened window but I would worry they would get too hot. I let my three free range today and left the new girls in the run so they could go anywhere they want. Hopefully they'll stumble into the coop and see laying nests and roosts and decide they like it. I dunno.
