***OKIES in the BYC III ***

To inject Tylan 50, use a syringe and a 22 gauge needle. (The higher the number, the smaller the needle)
I give 1/2 cc for a large bird and 1/4 cc for a chick or a Bantam.
Injections can be made into the muscle of the thigh..I like the back side of the thigh...and only barely into the muscle.
Or into the muscle of the breast. I hold the bird in my left hand with the tail under my arm, bracing the bird against my side and inject into the left breast in a slightly upward motion thru the skin into the flesh.
Thank you very much! That is helpful! when you saw "upward motion" are meaning something similar as to starting an IV?

Hey Buster52 it was me asking about the netting. I want to get soem but dont' want to buy things i dont' need. I plan to use it with an extension cord. Can you tell me what i need to get with it? THanks Cathie Sue

Well, you will need a charger. We have three different kinds. We have a solar, a plug in, and a battery operated one. We use the 110 current one hooked up to the house to run three of them, with an electric line going to each one. I wouldn't put my 110 charger out in the weather. When you buy the netting, you will want to get the two prong, step-in type. The one prong is very hard to set, although starting a hole with a hammer and a big nail helps when you have clay and it is hot and dry out.

Some people prefer just step in posts running several lines of polywire or poplytape. You can run it a long way for a lot less money (electronetting runs $200 for 164 feet). We might use that just for backup. Double protection. Create a large paddock and run the several netting setups within it.

On setting up the netting, they say have it in a rectangle or square, but it is much easier to set up if you use an oval. Just lay it out on the ground and drag it around until the ends meet, then step all the posts in.

Only thing I would add is I like to make sure I go in at an angle, and always pull back on the syringe. I always inject the breast, just easier for me. Also sometimes I have to use a towel to cover the chicken to avoid flapping wings. Needles are cheaper to buy in bulk, think I bought 100 for $10.
Wish there was a good tutorial for injections on BYC or somewhere. Hopefully you wont need the tylan anytime soon.

Evening everyone: The official mid way through the month egg count is 15 eggs and counting.. Anyone else getting eggs this Winter? Without extra lighting or heat source? I am not conplaining bout the eggs but they sure are laying everywhere but the nesting coop!

I'm still sick. My FIL had a Dr's appt today which led to being admitted in the local hospital, which then led to his being transferred to a Tulsa hospital. I hope they figure out what is wrong this time. He just got out of the hospital a couple of days ago, they never figured out what was going on. He has lots of health problems so it could be just about anything.

Goodness. I'll keep him in my thoughts.
And I'm sorry you're ill.
