***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What breeds does she have???  One of my projects is to get some rabbit housing ready and start a small meat rabbit raising project (just for us not for resale or anything)

I'm not sure what breeds she has. I know the parents of this one are both mixed breed. She has a few that she has considered breeding to sell babies but I don't recall what type she said they were.

Yeah , it's broody hen time in southern Oklahoma. Had one hen that started setting last saturday, and two more started yesterday, I am hoping this is a sign that the weather is going to straighten out and start to get warmer and stop it's flip flopping around.

For anyone that might rememberBubba the knuckle footed calf from ast Febuary/March, he made it lmost to a year old before he started having problems with that weaker leg, he has made it to freezer camp! What a job to process him at home, but was sure worth the effort.

I'm the guy with the fox (or something else just as bad) in his henhouse from Tulsa.

We managed to find two people selling 3-4 month old pullets. They won't lay for a couple more months, but at least I know they are young, and I won't have to wait too long for eggs. I bought 3 RIR and 3 Barred Rocks. The RIR look to be the real deal, not production birds. I've had Prod. Reds from Country Hatchery in the past and they were just great. It will be interesting to see the difference in the true RIR. So far, the RIR aren't my favorites -- real skittish and periodically yanking feathers from the smaller Barred Rocks. But maybe they'll settle down. They've had no real time to do that so far.

My one surviving BO has an injured eye. I can't tell if it is nerve damage, injury to the eye, or both. However, she pretty clearly cannot see out of one eye. That has put her in a state of general distress. She just wants to sit on a perch. My wife gave her some oatmeal, and she ate that.

Anybody else have any experiences with one-eyed chickens? Do they eventually adapt or should I consider putting her out of her misery if she does not improve?

We have several 1 eyed chickens. They all free range & forage just fine. (DD has a thing for handicap chickens). Also I have some true RIR & they are not skittish. My rose comb RIR are more skittish, but I purchased them as adults. Had one rose comb go broody last yr & she has been the best mom & is much more friendly now. With birds the stock influences the personality IMO.

Awesome to her the calf made it to freezer camp. Much better than culling at birth! Awesome you gave him a chance & nurtured him.

Morning everyone! Quiet morning here, sun is out and snow is melting! It sure sounds like spring is hitting you all! Thats unusual because we are usually a couple weeks ahead of you but not this year, its more like two behind!
Kass I was tempted to get some strawberries yesterday at the auction(vendor set ups) They were bare root and I mean nbare! Totally dried out and the tops were pruned really close. They had a few green leaves but I was just afraid most wouldn't make it. Not a bad price at $5 a bundle. Had some beautiful rhubarb roots but my wife and I were talking the other night how neither of us knows anyone who eats the stufff! Should have got some just for the flower beds!lol.
Get to start moving the end of the week. Dreading but looking forward to getting back to my own place at the same time. Just wish it was back to Okla. I really need to win a lottery!lol
Donnie ,I didn't know sumatras came in white, bet those are pretty!
Been giving my birds lots of green grass and they sure devour it. Working on traing our dog daughter to not chase the chickens when I let them out. She is doing good as long as I am there and telling her no. Don't trust her on her own yet. When they jump she thinks its a sign to chase! The boy dachsund pup is reall good and a bit afraid of them but the girl pup is like Ginger and ready to play at sny sign!
Everyone have a great day.

Joe, thanks so much for sharing these pics. They are really beautiful!

A note of explanation to all of you: The beautiful little pullet had a not-too-badly crossed beak, and I couldn't bring myself to cull her, as I have been told to do, but I've always thought the condition was caused by something that happened during incubation. She had no problem eating or drinking and was healthy. Her cross beak was not noticeable at first. I took her to the first event Joe organized in Stillwell, and gave her to Joe's son. I slightly trimmed her beak right there, but got it too close, and she bled for awhile, which worried quite a few people, not to mention me! It was a cold, rainy day, and she had to stay there in a cage all day. Until yesterday, I didn't know how she fared; I've worried quite a lot about that little girl, but couldn't bring myself to ask. I was soooooo excited and relieved that Joe brought it up and that it had such a happy outcome.

I was also happy to hear that along with me, Joe feels that cross beak is not genetic, but rather some "glitch" during incubation. Not proof, by any means, but he's hatched many young from her with NO crossbeaks at all. I've had very, very few but don't use them as parents, so have no real knowledge, just a feeling.

Those were some nice looking silkies Joe and Betsy! Congrats!

Thought of another question for Donnie so I came back!lol Donnie I am just curious,do they ever do c-sections for horses? I would imagine it would be a very cost prhibitive thing, but I was just wondering! Also on Tulsa craigs there is 4 year old tb to give away!

idk about the c section part there doodle , kinda been thinking about it , but if it were possible im sure you wouldnt be able to breed the mare again unlike humans having a c section .. but if it just happens to be twins , the mare wont be bred again anyway
