***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I did further inspection of the chick, the mass is solid & hard. Taron said it is like a dried prune. Seriously it is rock solid. I have had birds without the yolk absorbed all the way before, this is nothing like it. Poor chick I will give him until tomorrow.
As long as he/she is eating, drinking and acting normal, I'd let it go. It may just drop off on its own as the chick grows.

I'm the guy with the fox (or something else just as bad) in his henhouse from Tulsa.

We managed to find two people selling 3-4 month old pullets. They won't lay for a couple more months, but at least I know they are young, and I won't have to wait too long for eggs. I bought 3 RIR and 3 Barred Rocks. The RIR look to be the real deal, not production birds. I've had Prod. Reds from Country Hatchery in the past and they were just great. It will be interesting to see the difference in the true RIR. So far, the RIR aren't my favorites -- real skittish and periodically yanking feathers from the smaller Barred Rocks. But maybe they'll settle down. They've had no real time to do that so far.

My one surviving BO has an injured eye. I can't tell if it is nerve damage, injury to the eye, or both. However, she pretty clearly cannot see out of one eye. That has put her in a state of general distress. She just wants to sit on a perch. My wife gave her some oatmeal, and she ate that.

Anybody else have any experiences with one-eyed chickens? Do they eventually adapt or should I consider putting her out of her misery if she does not improve.

It may take her a few days or so, but she’ll adjust sooner or later. I have several, some one eyed rescue hens, and they do just fine.

I also have a blind rooster and alas, a totally blind hen.

She even lays eggs. They do have their own run for their safety.

Was great to see so many old friends and make new ones at the Pryor show! Am nearly exhausted, but am a bit better now. Show/sales always wipe me out for a day or two.

Langshan Man and his helpers always do a great job with these shows. They benefit the 4H.
