***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I personally use Food Grade DE for worming and for mites, and dip legs in oil for leg mites...which I did purchase a bantam Sumatra hen from auction, last month, that had leg mites so bad some parts of her toes were missing and looked like she was growing spurs from the tops of her feet, they were so bad she absolutely refused to walk on the wire bottom in their coop, so I asked banjojoe at the next auction what it could be.(Thanks Joe!)
Anyway I mixed some DE in with some veggie oil and dipped her legs (and the roo that came with her) and three days later when I went to dip again, they looked 100% better. I am still dipping every 3-4 days, til I believe it's totally cleared up.

Just my two cents...

Frontline spray is another option for mites and leg mites. One spray on the legs for leg mites, and for body mites one spray under each wing and on the vent. Mine have never had leg mites, but it worked well for me one the one outbreak of body mites I had.

Just fyi, there are some sites that warn against using frontline, but mine had no adverse reaction at all
yes all these remedies work great , i use the permethrin due to already having it for the dogs and horses and other livestock , and 7 dust for plants .... frontline is another one that is good to have on hand as well , tractor supply ( local store ) just recently started carrying the DE , but DE can be more costly, so just depends on what your able to do at the time , wormer i use safe guard goat wormer , 1 cc and dilute it down and give lf adult birds about 1/2 to 1 cc depending on weight , it works great .. Thanks Mikaela

Remember I'm new to this what is DE? & you use this for wormer & leg mites I like only having to buy 1 product. thanks for the help!
I do think some of them have this cause they have like knotts or spurs on top of their toes.

Help!

Not freaking out but definitely lost as to what to do for one of my chicks. We saw red on its back tail feathers. We found the source, seems someone or it itself broke off part of the feather but near where the blood is. There are two of them that are that way, one worse then the other. What can i do to stop the bleeding? I already washed the area an noticed that it's still bleeding. Can't put it in with the others since they will go after it, but after I separate it how long before I can put it back with the others? Thanks!

DE is Diatomaceous Earth - I buy it in 50lb bag at the feed store think it is around $30 & last forever. It has many uses, just be sure to get food grade.

To stop bleeding I use a powder designed to stop bleeding, I purchase it at the feed store. Not sure of a substitute. Unless it is pouring blood I wouldn't worry about it. I also buy bluekote to spray on wounds, keeps it from being red which attracts the others to peck.

can use just about anything as to make the bleeding clot faster , ive had to use flour before on wounds on the animals , just depends on severity of the situation

The one feather that is broken to the tip of the pin feather is not flowing with blood, looks like it's trying to clot. then the other one is split in half an it is doing the same, not alot of blood loss in general. With the pin feathers in that condition, should I pull them out like the second step says or do the first step? Thank you for all your help.

Quote: Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade only, it's all natural and has no chemicals...you can add a little to their feed, you can put it in under their nesting materials and you can put it where they dust bathe, and yes it is kind of expensive but as jcat said, it lasts forever...I have had this 50# bag for at least a year...I also worm my horses and dog with it. and use it for fleas and ticks. I have also heard it works well for pests in gardening...but I don't have much of a green thumb, it's more black....LOL! I am going to try to grow some potatoes and peppers this year...

I use corn starch or flour, that seems to help stop bleeding....
