***OKIES in the BYC III ***

There was an auction every Saturday morning in Perkins. Have to watch people runnin the bid on you, lot of sellers in the crowd. But if your just needing a rooster probably best to snag somebodys extra.

it's soooo not fair!!! I wanna go!!! Blanchard is just to far today, heck don't even know where it is. Probably wouldn't feel that way but, I took the day off work last friday and the kids and I piled in the car drove to the supposedly HUGE vinita poultry auction. Man was that a waste, other than we had a good time together. They didn't have much (thats not their fault) but I didn't like the way it was run either, and you can't see very well, unless you've been before and you KNOW you have to get right in the middle in the front if you want to buy. Not my cup a tea so we wont make that drive again. Guess I'm spoiled, I love the chupps auction! good variety, friendly people, you can stand right by what you are bidding on. But once a month just isn't enough!!
If you decide to make the drive for a large poultry auction, Newcastle would be the top pick in this area. Make a day of it, take the kids to the zoo & then go to the auction. Just double check that the auction is happening that wk before the drive. Sometimes the ag building will be reserved for a school function & the auctions get canceled.

Last night Blanchard got off to a rough start for me. Once they finally began selling grown birds, they seemed to be goig through the birds quickly. The first 5 hours I wanted to leave and was barely hanging on to endure the crap coming across the table. The bird selection was slim, but Taron got a new blue EE roo (he has the pretties eyes, just ask her how handsome he is) & I got a nice RIR roo. We stayed much later than I expected, think I left about 11 & they still had a few birds. Also we checked out the fastes ever, prob only 15 minutes total. That was an awesome perk.

Anyone try the new Yukon Auction???? Wondering if it will stick around to be a good one, would love to hear a report.

I have an assortment of chickens! I have barred rocks, buff orphingtons, australops, silver laced wyandottes, rhode island reds, and a brahma rooster (16 chickens total). I also have 4 ducks. I have been incubating and selling chicks. I have 4 hens of laying age and the rest will start very soon, so I am in need of another rooster. I love the one I have now, he was a rescue and is a very sweet boy. I am looking for a rooster that is very friendly or is young so I can work with him, I don't do mean birds! My husband already thinks I'm nuts, so don't think I'll be driving to Blanchard for an auction! Anyway I'm north of Stillwater so I was trying to find a rooster somewhere close.
I am certain an Okie can get you a nice Roo! I will PM MItzi, she always has had very nice roos & she LOVES to share. Maybe a few others will chime in with offers.

MJ thought you would like to know we hatched out a coupld of cochin eggs this week and I am about to set a few more. I will get pics of the babies in a bit and post them for ya! One came out all yellow! Not sure if they are pure cochin cause we had a couple of other roos in there since they were small but they are gone and Mr. Spotty is the king of castle. I even has some blue frizzle ones to breed him with. Cant wait to see what they look like.

The Blue frizzle and Mr. Spotty should make some pretty babies!

I brought my Mama hen and her chicks in to the garage this morning cause the mist was freezing. She was VERY mad when i picked her up but calmed down when I reunited her with the chicks in an empty brooder. Wish i could have hens raise all my chicks. It is so much easier.

Well, initially I was joking about starting an indoor garden with all of my early plant starts ... but more and more it's looking like my indoor garden may become real if this weather continues to be so cold and nasty. I suppose we'll still get 110 plus degree weather this summer too, just to add to the misery. Sigh. New chicken house is coming along slowly. Have most of one cordwood wall built, only three more to go. It's a looooooooot of work for being recycled. Way more time than just cutting up pallets and reusing the wood from them. And we still need to get started on the yard cover. I want their whole yard covered so that we can be gone for a weekend if we need to be without worrying that they will get out or something will get in. The neighbors whining about our chickens really needs to understand what creatures are out there rummaging around in their own yard that's more dangerous than our chickens. We even had a coyote in town over the last couple of weeks and we know we have a den of red foxes less than three blocks from us. Plus possums and skunks and armadillos and hawks and owls and racoons ... people just think there are no wild animals in town.

Well hope everyone has a nice (although dreary) weekend. Eat something good and warm, hug your children, and enjoy a good chicken show or two!
I feel sorry for folks like your neighbors. They are so uninformed.

Hi everyone! I just found this thread and decided to follow it. Getting ready to take treats out to the flock, they're not liking this weather! Can we post here if we are looking for a specific type of chicken? I have been looking in the buy and sell forum but I never find anything around my area. Anyway, just wanted to say Hi! Everyone have a great day, it will warm up soon!!
Welcome!

if you are looking for a peacable roo, try a giant cochin or faverolle- they are awesome roos
Yes, my LF Cochin boy is a true sweetheart, a real mellow guy. He doesn't crow a lot, just after all the other guys have had a competition, he shuts them all up with one cock-a-doodle-do. He adores his hen, follows her and sits beside her, even goes in tyhe coop when she is laying. Nanakats has several LF roos together with some girls and they get along well.

i really think cochins are the way to go- awesome birds- even the bantams are sweet
I don't have a lot of different breed experience to compare them to but I think the hens are rather smart and sassy and determined to do what ever they get in their head; be broody, escape, lay in the wrong place, roost in the wrong place..... they don't know they are small. I adore them all.
