***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Does anyone on this thread have Wheaten Marans that won't charge an arm and a leg for hatching eggs?
Think the last eggs at auction in Newcastle went for about $30+ I was thinking Jack may have wheatens, I may be wrong. He will be at poops.

When you get into a "new" or "rare" type it is hard to find bargain price eggs. It cost a lot to get mature breeding birds, so sellers are trying to recoop some of their expense.

Miohippos hope you don't regret selling your buck. DH really wants to replace ours, but he throws pretty babies. All his offspring from this yr will be mated with a dairy buck next yr. I want to try & get kids to grow fatter faster for butchering.

Me too. we are looking into a kiko billy. Kikio's are suppose to be more hardy and worm tolerant. hopefully we get a good one.
Fast and fatter from a dairy ??? Or do you just mean eventually and not trough the dairy buck? Because i thought most dairy breeds were not well muscled; we were thinking of adding some dairy so the moms would be better milk producers. The dairy doe we have is very thin compared to the boers and get pushed around a lot. hope this doesn't sound rude that's not how i intended it i was just wondering.

SUCCESS!!!
I sucked it up, wrapped a wad of tape around my broken hand, and got the outside coop finished up weekend before last and moved the chicks out of my living room!!

. Then we had freezing weather, rain, hail, and general nastiness... So I had to run an extension out and set the heatlamp

. I only had them knock it down one time but didn't have any fires

So after a solid week of keeping them cooped up in their new home, this last weekend I taped the useless club up again and ran a pen of 3' chicken wire up for a makeshift run. They have been staying in, pretty much, and the cats and dogs have been staying out, pretty much. Mom's little ankle-biter wiggled in after dark the first night and then couldn't figure out how to get out so he barked for about a half an hour til I went and let him out, but since hasn't attempted any more break-ins. A couple of the chicks wanted to see what life was like outside the wire, and flew out but I scooped 'em up and put them back in and they seemed resigned to their fate... No more fly-overs.
But today I opened the coop as I left for work and no one is there to watch them.. I should have rigged up a web-cam :)

Yes if I remember correctly Jack does do the Wheaten Maran.

Quote: I have no idea who that is....lol!
Last time a bought "Wheaten" eggs at the auction I paid 20 dollars and ended up with blues and blacks....not one Wheaten in the bunch

Quote: Well, I contacted someone online that has Wheatens and they wanted 60 a dozen....for shipped eggs, to me that's an arm and a leg for eggs that you might get lucky and have a 50% hatch.

Our thought is long term. Hopefully adding the dairy we will get moms that have more milk to feed their kids in 2 yrs. Many meat producers have been doing this to get kids to slaughter weight faster. You should come see my Nubian, she puts my boers to shame! Every goat on this place is scared of her! My Nubian Saanen cross is small compared to her.
The up coming meat goat conference finishes up with a Kiko auction. The catalog isn't listed yet, I am guessing it will all be to pricey for my pocket, but always fun to atend-- the girls & I are going. They are looking forward to learning to do fecal counts http://www.nkrextension.com/coming-events.html

Hey Guys,
I have a pair of Japanese bantams and have read that the hens are a broody breed. I am trying to find out if my hen is broody. Will she sit on the first egg she lays if she is broody or does a broody hen wait until there are a few eggs in the nest? If so should I store the eggs inside and then put three or so in the nest to see if she will sit on them. Or maybe try golf balls first? I have only had laying hens up until I bought this breeding pair so I haven't been able to observe this behavior before. None of my laying hens seem to be broody so.... If this is a dumb question let me know.

How to tell your cat spends too much time w/ chickens .............................. her white fur is brown from dust bathing. She spends as much time stalking and catching insects as rodents.
