***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Okay! That makes me feel so relieved! Yes they have a very well protected run with other animals! I should probably wean them off of the lamp at night, right?
I let my chicks tell me when they don't need the heat light, I would move it up until they are comfy,(or lessen wattage on the light) I would be more apt to use at night longer then day, if they are in a temp controlled house they will need it a lot less then if they are in brooder outside. The first chicks I had I had done all the reading and knew it was 5 degrees less per week for weeks, my poor chicks I was sooooo by the book, but then I had a broody mom and chicks and saw they didn't freeze to death and die if they weren't heated for more then 2 minutes that opened my eyes on chicks for sure. I was so bad I wouldn't even take them out from the light and hold them aftaid they minute or two they weren't under the light would kill them! lol

Broodie Update: WLR Standard Cornish mom and babies are fine. Babies seem to be too big to fit under mom without parts sticking out. I still count ten, so she's doing a great job!

I witnessed my stern momma reprimanding her chicks for looking out at me. She konked each on the head, sharply, and made a gutteral scolding noise. This is the mom who stepped on the four that are now orphaned and in a brooder in the shop. Sister, up top, ignores the chicks completely. She sat on eggs but isn't caring for any chicks now.

Here's a strange bird! Have you ever seen such tiny feet?

Mine are outside in the barn which opens up into the run.. It's metal so of course it warms up pretty good in there. I thought I'd be by the book too but you quickly realize that's almost impossible! Haha I went out to turn their light on just in case but they really didn't show an interest in it. I lost another silkie... I think pasty butt got it and I also this the others were bullying it. I'll try to post a pic (it was taken on my phone) it's vent was completely exposed

Today we found out that I may be going on a business trip with DH to New Orleans...a complete surprise and blessing as we most likely would never have been able to go on our own. It has been at least eight years since we have had any kind of vacation aside from day trips. Our hotel is on Canal street a couple of blocks from the sea.

That is awesome, have a great time.
