I know they either don't eat it or they eat it come into the house and vomit it up for you to clean up.Oh, that wouldn't be good then. My doxy loves to hunt rodents, or steal them from the cats, but he doesn't eat them ever.

Welcome to the family! Aren't barred rock fun? i have one and she is a bossy thing, different from my first one who was curious about everything- i am sure someone here can fix you up!Hello All, I am new to this forum, live in Goldsby, just south of Norman and have two chickens, Perky and Floppy, due to the status of their comb. They are barred rock and funny birds and I enjoy watching them. They coexist peacefully with our 5 dogs, free range durning the day on our fenced in 2.5 acres with plenty of trees to hide and scratch under. Our dogs keep all predators at bay except snakes which get in their pen on occasion. I have enough coop (The coop is fenced inside the other fence) for about 4 more birds and actually had 6 to start, but the others died mysteriously, healthy and active on day, dead the next, or were killed by something that took their heads off and left the rest of the carcass. If it was a possum my dogs definitely dropped the ball. However, these girls have been healthy and happy for a couple of years and have very distinct personalities. Floppy is friendly and gregarious, curious and trusting so when I call her to a worm or grub she comes running. Perky on the other hand, is very stand offish and even after all this time won't eat out of my hand…misses a lot of good grubs that way!
I was reading about worming and have never wormed my girls, but have not seen any of the symptoms of worms. I had thought about some prophelaxis, but have not done so. It sounds like their are strong notions about what is best to keep the girls healthy! I have the worm meds on hand, just in case, but haven't use any.
If anyone near norman has 2 or 3 barred rock to get rid of or sell, I'd be interested.
Have a goodern!

I have a "newbie to chickens" question. I ordered a Hova-Bator and was planning on buying some SQ Blue Copper Maran and Wheaten Maran hatching eggs in hopes of ending up with a hen that my daughter could show locally. I will only be able to keep a couple chicks and will need to sell the rest. Is this a good time of year to sell chicks or should I wait until the spring? Are there other options for me to sell chicks besides craigslist? Any insight is appreciated!
Wheaten Marans can be sexed quite early. At about 4 weeks the feather color differences are pretty ovbious.I would think you need to keep them all well past the chick stage to determine sex and even longer on the females to decide which ones to keep for showing. Other than Craigslist you can sell or give away the extras by posting ad here, take them to a poultry swap, or take them to an auction.
