***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just got home about an hour ago and my chickens have been decimated!!

It was my dog Sasha. We left them at the house for 24 hours Gary was camping and I was working. She breeched the fence somehow, I walked the whole thing and can't see where or how she did it. She had never shown any interest at all in either the chickens or breeching the fence before now. I took Tucker to my FIL so I know he had nothing to do w/ it. She even brought the dead ones in the house, (we have a dog door) walked in the house to dead chickens everywhere! The only survivors were Jackie O, and the 3 broody moms w/ their 8 chicks. (mostly boys) and to make it worse, Gary took all the eggs to the camping trip!!!!!! I have a handful mostly of pullet eggs I am going to put in the bator today to see if I can salvage some of the genetics I was working towards. Just very sad.
Oh my goodness!! Kassaundra that is terrible. I'm so sorry for you....let's hope the eggs have some of the genetics you need and your hubby brings home some un-used eggs you can try to hatch.

Oh Kass, how horrible! I know it won't help because you were working toward a personal standard, but if you want a couple of the grey girls you can have them. I'd offer you one of my no-necks, but neither one of them got there through genetics. If there's anything we can do, let us know.

Kass, this just makes me feel sick. I am so so sorry :-(( I hate to even ask....but what about Oreo and the EE's? Yeti....? This is just horrible and I am so very sorry. If there's ANYthing I can do-look for certain birds, transport birds or eggs to you from someone, I'll gladly do it.
I feel like they were my babies, too. We've all watched them grow along with you :hit

Thanks guys. I am going to see what I can hatch w/ the eggs from the flock then assess what it is I need after that.

Ksane, the only 4 hens to survive were Jackie O

Reba

Jackie O (again)

Thing 1 and 2

Besides them the 8 chicks from this recent hatch.

Everyone else is gone!!!!

Gary came home and we walked the fence together (again for me) and we both agree there is no breech, anywhere. She is shedding like crazy right now and she was carrying birds there is no feathers or hair anywhere in the fence line except at the gate which was shut and latched. When I came home she heard the car, but could/did not come back through the fence to greet me, even though she was obviously wanting to greet me. If she had been able to breech the fence that easily why did she not do so to greet me???? We both think someone came over and opened the fence then came back and shut it locking her in. None of our immediate neighbors would have done that, but there are a few of the "block" neighbors that could have.

This is so traumatic and heartbreaking. I can't find the words to tell you how very sorry sorry I am. You had the most beautiful and the healthiest birds of us all & I just can't believe it :-(
Could the dog have gotten out of the yard and maybe one of the neighbors put him back in the yard where the birds are not knowing he wasn't supposed to be in with the chickens?
I'm so sorry.

I need to buy some layers. Mon wants two more and I need a couple that lay tinted eggs. I wish I had time for the auctions but right now it's not possible. We wouldn't mind having birds that were a little older. Let me know if you have a few you cold spare. I can pick up within an hours drive of Collinsville.

I have a some I could part with. Most are young, this years hatch. There are a few from last year here too.
Here's a couple of pictures I just took to show what they look like.

This is one of my older hens from last year.

Here's a young one.

Then I had to get this shot.

Proud of what she did.

If interested, please send me a private message.

Kassaundra...could your dog have been retrieving the bodies after a neighbor's dog did the damage? ...assuming a neighbor opened the gate and then locked your dog in. ...or is the doggie door in the fenced yard?

Doggie door is in the dogs fenced part of the yard. No I think it was definitely Sasha, just that she had help getting in to the chickens yard.

Thanks for the offer Tony. I am going to see what hatches of the eggs I have before making any decisions.

@Kassaundra @Poco Pollo @Kyzmette

Here I go...my first attempt at fermenting feed. Whole oats, whole wheat, and chopped corn. The feedstore was out of barley on the day I picked these grains. Using ACV with the mother as the starter. I put too much in as I'm getting water overflow from the bottom bucket but luckily I have a nifty tub to put the buckets in. I don't have a lid so I'm going to use a super thin kitchen towel. That should be okay, right?

I found this strainer in my cabinet that I never use so I thought it would make the perfect strainer/scoop.
